Memphis - Rhodes College dominated the first set against Birmingham-Southern College this afternoon before BSC turned around and won the next three sets to win the game. The contest, deemed the Southern Athletic Association's Game of the Week was a matchup of two of the league's top three volleyball teams. Rhodes is now 9-6 on the year and 4-3 in conference while BSC improves to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the SAA.
Rhodes took advantage of a Panther squad who struggled serve receiving in the first set. BSC had setter Rachel Lee running everywhere trying to set her teammates while the Lynx powered to a .250 hitting percentage and held BSC to .029 during their 25-14 victory.
The Panthers turned the table on their hosts over the course of the next three sets, averaging .290 at the net as they held Rhodes to an average hitting percentage of .137.
Freshman
Kelsey Glasper brought plenty of energy to the court for Rhodes when she entered the game at the end of the third set. Her first play in the game, the Olive, Branch, Miss. native recorded a kill to get her teammates fired up for the fourth set where she then recorded five kills. Glasper hit .455 over 11 attacks. Gabby Gafford led the Lynx by hitting .500 with six kills on 10 attacks. Right side hitter
Morgan Hill tallied four kills in the third set for Rhodes.
Lulu Schulz once again led the Lynx in defense at the net with two solo blocks and six block assists. In the back row, libero
Mary Frances Daniel picked up 23 digs while defensive specialist
Camila Zimmerman made zero serve receive errors on 14 receptions.
Hannah McCarty tallied 23 assists on the day as
Sarah Nieland recorded 12.
Rhodes is at Hendrix for a 7 p.m. game at Hendrix, followed by two home games next weekend.
