MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team came in hungry for a win on Sunday afternoon, leading the Millsaps Majors for most of the game. However, a late 3-pointer from Megan Donaldson gave the Majors a 63-61 win over the heartbroken Lynx at Mallory Gymnasium.
Rhodes shot a season high 40% on 23 of 58 shooting including 6 of 20 from behind hte arch (30%) while going 9 of 12 from the charity stripe (75%). Millsaps finished 21 of 61 from the field (34%) including seven 3-pointers while getting to the free throw line 21 times. The Lynx forced 19 Major turnovers while the Millsaps bench out scored Rhodes 26-10.
The Lynx were red hot in the first quarter as junior
Erin Deery scored the teams first five points, including a 3-pointer, to lead 5-0 while a jumper from junior
Jessie Ustick made it 7-2. After a three from Millsaps, senior
Bailey Kramer and sophomore
Allie Young scored the next four points to move ahead 11-5.
With the score at 15-10, Rhodes got a 3-pointer from sophomore
Sara Giesen and a layup from Young to lead 20-10 late in the quarter. Millsaps cut it to five, but Young and Ustick pushed the lead to 24-16 at the end of one.
In the second, back-to-back 3-pointers from senior
Blaire Smith pushed the lead back to 10 at 30-20. Millsaps would close the gap to five going into break. Deery scored 10 in the half while Ustick and Smith added six each.
In the third, Millsaps got the lead down to one, but Rhodes would not surrender the lead as they pushed it to five thanks to four points from Ustick followed by free throws from Deery to go ahead 49-42. Young added a layup and suddenly Rhodes held a 51-42 lead. Millsaps got a bucket before the buzzer as Rhodes led 51-44 at the end of three.
However, the Majors controlled the fourth quarter, out scoring Rhodes 19-10. Millsaps almost immediately tied the game at 53, but a three from Smith put Rhodes back ahead by three, followed by a jumper from senior
Bailey Kramer to go up 58-53.
Another jumper from Kramer gave Rhodes a 61-58 lead with 4:23 to go. It would be the last time the Lynx would score as Millsaps scored the final five points, including the Donaldson three, to escape Memphis with the two point win.
Ustick led the way with 14 points and seven boards while Deery scored 13 points to go with five assists and two steals. Smith scored nine points to go with five assists while Kramer had eight points and eight boards. Young went for seven points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
Donaldson led the Majors with 18 points including six 3-pointers while Kala-Jewel Freeman added 15 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Katie Connor had 10 assists in the contest.Â
The Lynx continue to show signs of improvement despite falling to 1-13 overall and 0-3 in the SAA. They will try to regroup this Friday as they head to Danville, Ky. for a 6 PM ET matchup against Centre.Â
