Lynx Women Falter in the Second Half in Road Loss to Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. - Despite holding a three point lead at halftime, the Rhodes College women's basketball team went 5 of 28 (18%) in the second half and fell just short of a comeback bid in the fourth quarter as they lost to Centre College on the road, 43-37.

For the game, Rhodes shot 15 of 54 (28%) from the field and 1 of 16 (6%), a season low, from behind the arch. On the other side, Centre shot 38% and was only 18% from deep in the game. The Lynx forced 13 Colonel turnovers but Centre won the rebounding battle, 38-35, as well as bench points at 17-3.

The Lynx jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter behind four points from junior Erin Deery as well as a bucket from sophomore Allie Young. After another Deery bucket made it 8-4, Centre went on a mini 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 10-8.

Two free throws from senior Bailey Kramer tied it at 10 while each team exchanged baskets towards the end the quarter as the game was tied at 12. Centre got a late two pointer and took a 14-12 lead after one.

In the second quarter, the Rhodes defense was terrific, holding Centre to only six points in the quarter. Deery tied it almost immediately to start the second while a 3-pointer from senior Blaire Smith made it a 17-14 game. The Colonels led 18-17, but Rhodes finished the half outscoring Centre 6-2 for a 23-20 lead at the break.

The Lynx went ahead 25-20 to start the third behind two free throws from Young, but things began to unravel as Centre out scored Rhodes 11-3 throughout the rest of the quarter and pushed it out to a 17-3 run in the fourth to take a 37-28 lead.

Junior Jessie Ustick heated up from the field, scoring six points in the final frame and getting the Lynx within three with 1:48 to play. However, Rhodes would not hit another field goal as Centre was able to use free throws to close the game out and earn the win.

Ustick finished with 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting to go with four rebounds. Deery added nine points and six rebounds while Young had six points, six assists, and three blocks. Kramer pulled down 10 boards while Smith had a pair of steals.

Centre was led by Abigail Stewart with 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocks while Caroline Andreassen chipped in with seven points

Rhodes moves to 1-14 overall and 0-4 in the conference play with 3 of their 4 games being decided by six points or less and all four games being within one point in the fourth quarter.

The Lynx will look to bounce back on Sunday as they head to Sewanee, Tenn. for a 1 PM matchup against arch-rival Sewanee.
