SEWANEE, Tenn. - Despite three Rhodes College women's basketball players in double figures and erasing a 12 point halftime deficit, the Lynx fell just short to the Sewanee Tigers on Sunday afternoon by the score of 72-69.
Rhodes shot 26 of 68 from the field (38%) while going 6 of 18 (33%) from behind the arch. Rhodes was also 11 of 16 from the charity stripe. Despite having a size advantage, Rhodes only out rebounded the Tigers 46-45, but did pull down 24 offensive boards. However, Sewanee was also good in offensive rebounds with 23.
The Tigers shot 37% from the field and 21% from deep. Sewanee got to the line 22 times and shot 73% from the line.
Sewanee was in control in early on, jumping out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter before Rhodes cut it down to 16-9 at the end of the quarter. The Lynx got back-to-back 3-pointers from junior
Erin Deery to cut it down to three, but Sewanee immediately got the lead back out to 10 and took a 39-27 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Rhodes women began to cut into the deficit as the Lynx began to control the pain behind the play of senior
Bailey Kramer, junior
Jessie Ustick, and sophomore
Allie Young as Rhodes cut it to 44-41. After a basket from Sewanee, a 3-pointer from Deery cut the deficit down to two. However, the Tigers closed the quarter with five straight points to take a 51-44 lead after three.
In the fourth quarter, Rhodes cut it down to four points, but the Tigers again responded, pushing their lead back out to nine.Â
Down 66-58 with 3:27 to go, Rhodes went on a 7-0 run thanks to five points from Deery and a breakaway layup for Giesen. Sewanee held and used free throws to go back up by four, but a Deery 3-pointer with 13 seconds to go got it back down to one.
After trading possession with free throws and Giesen layup, a halfcourt heave at the buzzer would fall short and Rhodes would drop a heartbreaker.
Ustick led all scorers with 19 points while Deery scored 16 with four 3-pointers. Giesen added 11 including a pair of 3-pointers while Young had eight points, nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Kramer also pulled down nine rebounds to go with seven points.
For Sewanee, a pair of 20 points scorers led the way in SAA-leader Bella Taylor with 23 while Hannah McCormick added 20 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Rhodes moves to 1-15 overall and 0-5 in the SAA despite Rhodes being in all five conference contests this season. They will remain on the road next weekend as they head to Atlanta, Ga. for a 6 PM ET matchup with Oglethorpe.
