ATLANTA, Ga. - The Rhodes College women's basketball team struggled in the second half, shooting only 30% as they fell to one of the top teams in the conference, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, by the score of 64-54 on Friday evening Dorough Field House.
Rhodes shot 33% for the game and was only 3 of 15 from behind the arch. They got to the free throw lines 15 times and shot 60%, but committed 17 turnovers despite out rebounding the Petrels 41-40.
Oglethorpe shot 39% from the field and 25% from deep, getting to the line 22 times for a 68% shooting percentage from the charity stripe. The number 15 was the magic number for Oglethorpe as they had 15 points off turnovers, 15 second chance points, and 15 bench points.
After layups from senior
Blaire Smith and junior
Jessie Ustick for an early 4-3 lead, Oglethorpe went on an 8-1 run to take an 11-5 lead at the midway point of the first quarter. The Stormy Petrels were able to get that lead out to 10 early on, but the Lynx stayed composed and closed the gap to five at the end of the period.
The duo of Ustick and Smith went to work in the second quarter as they scored the first 11 points of the period, coming all the way back to tie it at 26. The duo both scored 10 points in the first half as Oglethorpe held a 33-30 lead at the break.
The third quarter would be the backbreaker for the Lynx as Oglethorpe built a seve point lead in the first three minutes. They would extend that lead out to nine over the midway point and held a 48-38 lead going into the final period.
Despite the never-give-up fight in the Lynx, it would prove to be too much to overcome as Oglethorpe matched any sort of run by Rhodes for the 64-54 win on Friday night.
Smith led the Lynx with 14 points while Ustick added 11 points and nine rebounds to go with a steal. Sophomore
Allie Young had a nice night with 11 points and eight rebunds to go with two steals and two blocks. Junior
Erin Deery poicked up three steals while senior
Bailey Kramer pulled down seven boards to go with six points.
Lauren Ransom led Oglethorpe with 18 points and seven rebounds while Jada Triplett had 15 points. Alexandria Brown had 13 points off the bench for the Stormy Petrels.
Rhodes moves to 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the SAA. They will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon as they head to Mount Berry, Ga. for a 1 PM ET matchup with the Berry Vikings.
