MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team made it two consecutive wins as they held off a Berry College Vikings run in the fourth quarter for a 55-52 win on Sunday afternoon at Mallory Gymnasium.
The Lynx used a big third quarter, where the outscored the Vikings 14-6 and held Berry to 1 of 12 shooting in the quarter, to build an eight point lead and finish for the victory.
Both Rhodes and Berry shot 39% from the field, shooting an identical 20 of 52, while Rhodes shot 21% from behind the arc. The Vikings forced 23 Rhodes turnovers, but did not help themselves at the line as they were 7 of 17.
The two teams were tied at 28Â after the first half as junior
Jessie Ustick paced the Lynx with nine points. Sophomore
Allie Young added six points in the first half while freshman
Anna Muller had another big day in her young career, scoring six in the first half.
The 14-6 run in the third quarter created some separation for the Lynx as Rhodes got another four points from Muller in the quarter while Ustick, Young, and senior
Blaire Smith chipped in in the scoring column.
The 14-6 run ultimately ended in a 18-6 run as the lead moved out to 12 after four straight points from Ustick to start the final quarter. Berry got the game down to three with 1:45 to play and one with 21 seconds on the clock, but a pair of clutch free throws from Smith clinched the game for Rhodes in the 55-52 win.
Ustick scored 17 points on 50% shooting with five boards and three steals while Muller and Young each had 10. Young added four rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block while Muller pulled down seven boards to go with two blocks. Smith and junior
Erin Deery had six points each while Deery added six rebounds. Senior
Bailey Kramer finished with 11 boards.
Alex Weeks led Berry with 15 points while Valerie McLure had 10 points off the bench.
Rhodes now sits at 3-17 overall and 2-7 in the SAA. They return to the road this weekend as they have a pair of tough matchups beginning against the top team in the conference, Birmingham-Southern. The Lynx and Panthers will battle at 6 PM on Friday.
