Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lynx Women Snap Skid with Dominant Conference Win Over Oglethorpe

MEMPHIS - It the past couple of weeks, one thing has continued to stand out during the Rhodes College women's basketball 15-game losing streak, they always fought. Many times, the Lynx had chances to win, but just couldn't quite get over the hump.

The fight and never-give-up attitude of the Lynx finally paid off on Friday, as they snapped their skid with a dominant performance in front of their home crowd, defeating the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels 69-55 in front of a great crowd at Mallory Gymnasium.

Rhodes shot a season-high 44% from the field and a season-high 47% from behind the arc, connecting on seven three pointers. The Lynx defense held Oglethorpe to 22% from the field and 16% from deep. Despite 26 turnovers, Rhodes found a way to dominate a tough team in the paint, getting 22 points, while holding a big Stormy Petrel team to 12.

Oglethorpe took their one and only lead at the beginning of the game, going up 2-0, but a 10-0 run from behind a pair of 3-pointers from senior Blaire Smith and a pair of lay ups from sophomore Allie Young put the Lynx up 10-2. The Petrels closed it to four before sophomore Sara Giesen buried a three of her own as the Lynx took a 13-7 lead into the break.

The Petrels looked to control the second quarter, closing the deficit to two midway through the quarter, but Rhodes responded with a 12-3 run behind five points from sophomore Erin Deery and Giesen's second three of the day to go ahead 29-18 and take a 29-20 lead into half.

Deery and Young, as well as great paint play from freshman Anna Muller, pushed the lead out to 11 while freshman Danielle Summers converted a huge layup plus the foul to give Rhodes a commanding 45-31 lead.

The Lynx took a 10 points lead into the fourth, and while Oglethorpe used a full court press to try and create turnovers and get back into it, the Lynx held strong and prevailed to pick up their first conference win of the season at 69-55.

Young finished with 16 points, seven boards, two assists, two blocks, and a steal while Deery had 14 points including three 3-pointers to go with five assists and three steals. Giesen added 10 points off the bench while Smith scored nine.

Summers and Muller proved to be difference makers in the game with Summers going for three points, two assists, and three steals while Muller had seven points to go with four blocks and two steals. Junior Jessie Ustick led the Lynx rebounders with nine while senior Bailey Kramer also had nine.

Jada Triplett led Oglethorpe with 15 points while Lauren Ransom had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Rhodes moves to 2-17 overall and 1-7 in the SAA and will look to build on this momentum going into Sunday as they will welcome in the Berry College Vikings for a 1 PM tip off from Mallory Gym.
