Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sullivan's Career High 26 Leads Lynx to First Road Win of the Season Over Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Rhodes College men's basketball team held off an Oglethorpe second half run to pull away and snap a 13-game losing streak away from Mallory Gymnasium, defeating the Stormy Petrels 104-84 on Friday evening at Dorough Field House.

Rhodes shot 44% for the game and connected on 18 3-pointers to finish a blistering 44% from behind the arch. The Lynx struggled from the free throw line, going 8 of 18. However, the big number in the box score was 34, which was how many turnovers Rhodes forced on the evening.

Oglethorpe shot 46% from the field and 43% from deep, hitting nine 3-pointers. Rhodes had 32 points off turnovers, 18 second chance points, and 48 points off the bench in the win. The Petrels only led for 11 seconds on their home gym.

After Oglethorpe scored the first two points to take their early lead, Rhodes began to catch fire as senior Brennan Sullivan and Andrew Lowrie hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 6-2 lead. Rhodes added three more 3-pointers from Sullivan, junior Anesu Nyawata, and sophomore Daniel Darst to go ahead 16-8.

Rhodes was not done there as they got the lead out to 27-11 as Nyawata, Sullivan, and freshman Mitch Weatherford each hit from deep as the Lynx connected on eight 3-pointers in the first eight minutes.

Oglethorpe tried to keep pace, but a total of 12 3-pointers in the first half built the lead to as high as 21. However, Oglethorpe closed the half strong, closing the gap to 51-37 at the break.

The Lynx built a lead out to 17 early in the second, but the Stormy Petrels began to make their move, closing the gap to eight with under 15 minutes to go.

Just as it seemed as Oglethorpe was closing in on a comeback, Sullivan came away with a big three followed by layups from senior Tyler Gee and junior Price Dalton to go back up by 13.

The Stormy Petrels did not go away, this time getting it down to seven at the midway point of the half, but Rhodes built the lead back out to 12 thanks to five points from Sullivan and baskets from Gee and freshman Owen Galvin.

That seemed to break Oglethorpe's sprit as Rhodes finally pulled away thanks in part to a 12-4 run to move ahead by 18 points and comfortably cruise for the 20 point road win.

Rhodes was led by Sullivan with 26 points, a new career high, as he connected a eight three pointers, also a career high. Freshman Bryce Berry added 13 points, with nine coming in the second half, and three steals.

Gee had 11 points, with nine in the second half, seven rebounds, four steals, and three blocks while Darst had 10 points. Senior J.J. Weir added six assists.

Mike Turner led Oglethorpe off the bench with 19 points while Justin Hughes had 14 and Chris Lawrence had 11.

Rhodes picked up their first road win since December 5th, 2015 at Covenant and their first conference road win since December 2nd, 2015 at Hendrix. They move to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the SAA, currently in a five-way tie for first with Centre, Sewanee, Hendrix, and Birmingham-Southern.

Rhodes will look to stay in the hunt on Sunday as they take on Berry College in a conference matchup at 3 PM ET.
