MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Rhodes College men's basketball team shot a season low 38% from the field and scored a season low 91 points and still had a chance to walk away victorious against Berry. However, the Lynx fell just short, as they lost 92-91 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lynx were 32 of 84 from the field on Sunday and shot 28% from deep despite connecting on 13 3-pointers. Rhodes again struggled at the free throw line, only going 14 of 25.
On the other end, Berry was 33 of 70 from the field and 6 of 14 from deep and shot 65% from the charity stripe. The Lynx forced 22 turnovers while only turning it over 12 times, but Berry dominated bench points, out scoring hte Lynx 70-45, while also earning a 57-45 advantage in rebounds.
Rhodes jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead thanks in part to a pair of a 3-pointers from senior
Brennan Sullivan and junior
Anesu Nyawata. However, the Lynx cooled down as Berry went on a 23-6 run to take a 28-16 lead midway through the first half.
The Vikings pushed that lead to as many as 14 with six minutes to play in the first half, but the Lynx stormed back as 12 points from Sullivan along with 3-pointers from freshmen
Bryce Berry and
Jake Nestlehutt cut the deficit down to 51-47 at the break.
Berry built a 57-49 lead to start the second half, but an 11-1 run capped off by a three from junior
Price Dalton and a layup from B. Berry gave Rhodes a 60-58 lead. The two teams exchanged buckets back and forth as Rhodes continued to stay ahead at 69-67.
However, a 17-1 run by Berry pushed them back ahead by double digits at 84-70 with 5:40 to play. However, Rhodes again fought back into the game, holding the Vikings to eight points for the rest of the half.Â
The Lynx went on a 21-6 run in the next five minutes thanks to nine points from Nyawata and six points from B. Berry. Junior
Ian Harrison drew a foul with the Lynx down by one and under a minute to play and sank both for a 91-90 lead.
However, Berry drew a foul on the other end with 23 seconds to play and hit both free throws to move back ahead by one. Rhodes had one final shot, but the shot jumper just missed at the Vikings escaped with a win on their home floor.
B. Berry finished with 18 points and six rebounds while Sullivan added 15 points and two steals. Nyawata had 14 points while JJ. Weir finished with five assists. Senior
Tyler Gee had six points, seven rebounds, a career-high five blocks, and two steals.Â
The Vikings were led by Lukas Korn with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Caleb Johnson and McCarty Forte each had 12 points.Â
Rhodes moves to 7-10 overall and 4-3 in the SAA as the loss to Berry may prove to be costly in a run for the SAA Regular Season Title. The Lynx end a four game road trip and return home on Friday with a 6 PM matchup against Oglethorpe.
