SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Rhodes College men's basketball team dropped their second straight conference matchup on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Sewanee Tigers thanks to a hot shooting second half, 111-101.
Rhodes went 39 of 86 (45%) from the field and 9 of 33 (27%) from behind the arch. The Lynx made a big improvement at the charity stripe, going 14 of 18 (78%). The Lynx were terrorized on the glass, with Sewanee winning the battle 49-33. Rhodes did force 26 turnovers while only giving it away 17 times.
Sewanee was red hot in the second half, shooting 63% from the field and 75% from behind the arch. Sewanee pulled down 15 offensive boards and got great production from the bench, scoring 54 points.
The Lynx were playing catch-up early on as they fell behind 6-0, but began crawling back into it thanks to an array of scoring from any different players. A jumper from sophomore
Daniel Darst with under 12 to go gave Rhodes their first lead at 17-16.
Rhodes began to heat up from the field for the next eight minutes as they built an 9 point lead at 35-26, getting easy looks inside the paint. Sewanee stormed back, out scoring the Lynx 28-14 in the final six minutes of the half as the Tigers took a 54-49 lead at the break.
It would be a back-and-forth second half as Rhodes almost immediately tied it on a 3-pointer from junior
Anesu Nyawata to tie it at 56. Nyawata's 3-pointer with under 15 to play gave Rhodes their first lead since midway in the first half at 63-62.
The Lynx would lead by as many as three midway through the second half, but it would be the final lead Rhodes would have as Sewanee took the lead again and never gave it away, pulling away for the 111-101 win.
Nyawata led the way with 20 points including a pair of steals while senior
Tyler Gee scored 14 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. Freshman
Bryce Berry scored nine while Darst had nine points and five assists.
For Sewanee, Brody Stone had 21 points and 17 rebounds while Matthew Lee had 21 points. Jorden Williams added 20 points.
Rhodes falls to 6-9 and 3-2 in the SAA. They are currently 0-6 on the road or at a neutral site. The Lynx will look to regroup this Friday as they head to Atlanta, Ga. for an 8 PM ET matchup against Oglethorpe.
