DANVILLE, Ky. - Despite leading by double digits throughout most of the second half, a cold spell from the floor along with poor free throw shooting led to a Perry Ayers layup with four seconds to go to force overtime. From there, the Centre Colonels completed the comeback and knocked off the Rhodes College men's basketball team 106-100 in a battle for first place in the SAA.
Rhodes was solid in the first half, connecting on nine 3-pointers and going 21 of 46 (46%) from the floor. However, Rhodes struggled in the second half, shooting 32% from the field and only hitting on two of their 14 3-pointers.
Meanwhile, despite going 1 of 13 from deep and committing 27 turnovers, Centre shot 54% from the field and got to the free throw line 46 times, converting 35 times at the charity stripe.
Rhodes jumped out to a 10-5 lead thanks to baskets from seniors
Brennan Sullivan,
Tyler Gee, and
J.J. Weir and pushed their lead out to 23-14 thanks to freshmen
Mitch Weatherford and
Bryce Berry.
The Lynx pushed the lead to as high as 13 as Weatherford connected on a 3-pointer followed by a layup from freshman
Preston Giroux.
Centre got it down to four, but Rhodes pushed it back to double digits as junior
Ian Harrison controlled the post while the hot shooting of Sullivan, Berry, and Weatherford combined to score 27 points in the half as Rhodes led 55-41 at intermission.
The Colonels kept looking to chip away at the deficit, but Rhodes found a way to maintain their double digit lead for at least the first portion of the second half.
With Rhodes leading 78-66, the Lynx looked as though they were in command and were going to pick up their first win in Danville since 2012. But Centre went on a 16-5 run to make it a one point game at 83-82.Â
Senior
Andrew Lowrie responded with a huge 3-pointer, but Rhodes closed the half by going 3 of 12 from the free throw line including some key free throws needed in the final minutes. Centre bounced back and got the layup from Ayers to tie it at 90 and force OT.
Centre did not lead at all in regulation, but took the lead for the first time in overtime after a pair of free throws from Ayers and never looked back, defeating the Lynx by six.
Berry was terrific for Rhodes, finishing with 16 points and five rebounds to go with two steals. Harrison added 12 on 5 of 7 shooting and eight rebounds while Sullivan and Weatherford each had 11. Giroux had nine points in nine minutes to go with three steals. Weir finished with six assists and six rebounds.
Ayers led Centre with 33 points including 15 of 17 at the free throw line while Jakob Spitzer had 23 and Jacob Bates had 21.
Rhodes moves to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the SAA Standings, sitting just behind the Colonels 4-0. Rhodes will head to the mountain on Sunday as they prepare to do battle with arch-rival Sewanee at 3 PM.
