JACKSON, Miss. - The Rhodes College volleyball team earned their second Southern Athletic Association win of the season as they swept the Millsaps Majors on the road, 3-0. Rhodes moves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in SAA play.
No particular individual statistic truly stand out in Saturday's matchup as the Lynx played an outstanding game as a team. Rhodes finished with 36 kills to only 13 errors as they hit .193 as a team. Meanwhile, Millsaps had 34 kills to 22 errors for a team hitting percentage of .103.
The first set was a tight back-and-forth battle between the two SAA rivals as one team looked to set the tone in set one. Down 14-13, Rhodes rattled off four straight points behind kills from sophomores
Katherine Bolyard and
Lulu Schulz.
Rhodes took a 24-21 lead, looking to close the set, but three straight points by the Majors tied the match at 24. After each team exchanged a point, Bolyard would close the set with back-to-back kills for a 27-25 win.
The second set would be a tight contest between the two squads as the match was tied at 13. From that point, Rhodes would out score Millsaps 12-7 from the likes of Perlis, Schulz, sophomore
August Bishop, and freshman
Emily Korba to take set two 25-20.
The Majors came out hot in set three and would take a 16-10 lead as they looked to get a set back and force a fourth. However, Schulz and sophomore
Ellen Platt had other plans as the Lynx stormed back to tie the match at 19.
Bishop and Perlis would get it done the rest of the way. With the match at 24-23 in favor of Rhodes, Perlis would close the match with her seventh block of the game to lift the Lynx to the win.
Bolyard led the way with eight kills followed by Schulz with seven and Bishop with six. Sophomore
Hannah McCarty finished with 15 assists while sophomore Arati Joshi added 10.
Defensively, both Perlis and the nation's leader in blocks, Schulz had seven blocks while Bolyard finished with eight digs.
Rhodes will hit the road to Alabama as they prepare for another SAA matchup against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM.
