MEMPHIS - After a lightning delay lasting nearly an hour, the Rhodes College men's soccer team opened their home season against Webster at the Volgas Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Behind two goals from junior
William Mitchell, the Lynx move to 1-2-0 on the young season in a 2-1 defeat of the Gorloks.
The Lynx used a 10-1 advantage in shots in the half as they out shot Webster 18-7 for the match. Rhodes held a 7-3 advantage in corners and were able to control possession a majority of the match.
Rhodes struck first in the 22nd minute as Mitchell was able to get free in the box and finish from close within to give the Lynx an early 1-0 lead. Despite several attempts on goal, Rhodes could not find a second goal as they took their one goal advantage into the break.
In the second half, Webster found an equalizer in the 53rd minute as a cross from Brendan Shields found Alex Whalen and gave the Gorloks a chance.
However, the Lynx used great movement and passes to take the lead back one minute later in the 54th minutes as sophomore
Austin Ly found Mitchell who found the back of the net for his second goal of the game.

Matt McKeand did an excellent job on the defensive end to keep the Lynx in front. Rhodes got a few more looks at goal, but it was not needed as the Lynx earned their first victory of the 2016 season.

Mark Robinson, and freshman
Nick Isolani all had two shots a piece. Freshman Jaiman Patel earned his first career start and win in goal, picking up two saves on the afternoon.
Rhodes will return to the pitch tomorrow afternoon as they will take on Westminster on the final day of the Volgas Memorial Tournament. The Blue Jays defeated Hendrix 4-1 in the earlier contest of the day. Webster will take on the Warriors at 12 p.m. followed by Westminster and Rhodes at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
