CONWAY, Ark. - The No. 3 seed Rhodes College baseball team scored nine runs on 17 hits as they blasted the home-standing No. 2 seeded Hendrix College Warriors, 9-2, to move into Sunday's final of the Hendrix Pool with an undefeated record.
Rhodes wasted no time taking the early lead as they put four runs on the board in the first. Junior
Ryan Olive started it off with a two RBI double followed by a RBI triple from freshman
Will Hunt. Sophomore
Zac Lange made it a 4-0 game with a RBI single.
Hendrix got one run in the second, but senior
Nathan Foshee got it back in the fourth as he put down a beautiful bunt on a suicide squeeze to put Rhodes ahead 5-1.
Sophomore
Jack Mercer put in a terrific effort on the mound as he kept Rhodes well ahead of the Warriors. Mercer ended up pitching all nine innings, allowing two runs on four hits to go with a pair of strikeouts and walks.
The Lynx added some more insurance in the seventh and eighth innings as senior
Marcus Moreland had a RBI double while sophomore Levin Greenberg added a RBI triple in the seventh. In the eighth, Foshee and junior
Bennett Notestine each added RBI singles to make it 9-1.
Hendrix got one run in the eighth, but Rhodes slammed the door shut to earn the big win.
Lange went 4-for-5 on the day with a RBI and two runs scored while Moreland, Foshee, and Greenberg all had three hits. Moreland, Olive, and Foshee all had a double each while Hunt, Greenberg, and Lange all had a triple each.
The Lynx will take on Hendrix, Oglethorpe, or Centre tomorrow at 12 PM, needing only one win. If they are defeated, they will play against in a winner-take-all game. The winner of this pool will move on and face the winner of the BSC pool in the SAA Championship Series.
