DANVILLE, Ky. – The Rhodes College women's lacrosse team fell to the Avenging Angels from Meredith College on Saturday afternoon, 19-9. The matchup was a rematch of the first round of last years NCAA tournament, which the Lynx won a year ago.
In the first half Rhodes went on a quick 4-1 run, with goals from Olivia Holmes, Ashley Doyle, Elizabeth Gaudio, and Morgan Fuller. The Avenging Angels wasted no time mounting a run of their own, as Carlee Joseph added 2 goals in Meredith's 6-0 run. Rhodes began fighting back with a pair of goals from Kendal Cunningham that came 30 seconds apart from each other. A pair of goals from Morgan Fuller, and a couple more tallies from Joseph made the game a close 10-8 at the end of the first half.
The Lynx however struggled in the second half with only 1 goal from Ashley Doyle, while the Avenging Angels managed to tally 9 second half goals. Julie Capretti had a stellar second half as she added 4 goals to Meredith's lead.
Despite the appearance, Rhodes statistically played with Meredith throughout the game. The groundball battle was 12 to 17 in Meredith's favor. Rhodes cleared the ball 100 percent throughout the day, and went 15-29 draw controls. Another bright spot for the Lynx was their ability to get 4 free position attempts, and capitalized several times.
The final score from Danville Kentucky was 19-9, but the final score does not reflect the very close first half. The Lynx move to 9-3 on the season with the loss. The Lynx do have a chance to redeem themselves on Sunday with a big conference game against Centre in Danville.
