MEMPHIS – Despite three home runs on the day, the Rhodes College baseball team could not fight off the No. 6 team in the nation, the Birmingham-Southern Panthers, as they drop a pair on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, the Lynx gained a 1-0 lead as sophomore Zach Lange hit a single to left center, which drove freshmen
Will Hunt home. However, the Panthers retaliated with 5 runs each in the 3rd and the 4th inning which put them up at a distance 10-1. The Lynx tried to fight back as junior
Bennett Notestine homered a solo home run down the right field in the 5th inning. Hunt also joined in the bomb party as he drove a solo home run down right field in the 6th inning, reducing the lead to 10-3. However, the Panthers immediately fired back 2 runs to put them back up 12-3 in the 7th inning, and in the 9th inning both teams drove in a run to make the final score 13-4.
The Panthers rode their momentum into the second game as they scored 6 unanswered runs. In the 7th inning, although the Panthers managed to score another run, freshmen
Jacob Telli smashed a solo home run down right field. Despite the late momentum of the Lynx, they ultimately lost the game 7-1.
Senior
Daniel Morris started on the mound for the Lynx in the first game and pitched 3 innings, giving up 9 hits and 9 runs as well as 4 strikeouts. He is now 4-3 on the season.
Senior
Adam Putnam got the start the second game, pitching 3 innings and giving up 6 hits, 4 runs as well as 2 strikeouts. He is now 1-7 on the season.
Offensively, Hunt had a double as well as a solo home run in the first game which gave him an RBI. Notestine and Telli also each added a solo home run as well as two hits each in the second game.
Rhodes falls to 16-15 on the season and will face the Panthers from Birmingham-Southern again at 12 pm tomorrow, April 3rd.
