MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team used timely hitting and strong pitching performances to win, 3-2 and 7-0 (7), over the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, claiming the series on Saturday afternoon at Stauffer Field.
With one game to go in the regular season, if Rhodes defeats Oglethorpe to complete the sweep and Hendrix defeats Millsaps in their Sunday matchup, the Lynx will claim the No. 3 seed at the 2016 SAA Championship.
In game one, Oglethorpe jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a two run blast from Adrian Celata in the top of the first. It would be the final time Oglethorpe would score in teh game as the Rhodes pitching began to take control.
Rhodes would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third as sophomore
Levi Greenberg skied one to center to score junior
Bill Munson and make it a 2-1 game. However, the Stormy Petrels held tight to their 2-1 advantage.
In the fifth, Munson scorched a double to left center to score freshman
Brady John from first and tie the game at two. One batter later, senior
Marcus Moreland grounded into a double play, but it was enough to score Munson and make it a 3-2 game.
From there, senior
Daniel Morris (6-3) threw seven complete, allowing two runs on seven hits to go with three strikeouts and no walks while sophomore
Will Vance earned the two out save, going two complete and allowing no runs on no hits, his first save of the year.
Munson went 2-for-4 for the day with a RBI and two runs scored while junior
Bennett Notestine finished 2-for-4 as well. Both Greenberg and freshman
Will Hunt were 1-for-3 while John finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.
In the second game, sophomore
Jack Mercer allowed seven runs in three innings, but Oglethorpe could not push a run across. From there, Mercer only allowed one hit the rest of the way en route to a complete game shutout.
Rhodes took a 1-0 lead in the fifth off a wild pitch that scored freshman
Jordan Baker. The Lynx followed that up with a six run sixth inning to blow the game wide open.
A throwing error on a beautiful sac bunt from sophomore
Zac Lange pushed home junior
Ryan Olive followed by a sac fly from John to make it 3-0. After a RBI single from Munson, Notestine tripled down the right field line to score two more and make it a 6-0 game. He would later score on a wild pitch to put the game out of reach.
Mercer (4-3) went seven complete, allowing no runs on eight hits to go with two strikeouts. It is the second straight seven-inning complete game victory for Mercer and his first ever complete game shutout.
Munson finished 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored while Olive was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Notestine went 1-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored while senior
Nathan Foshee finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
Rhodes moves to 21-18 overall and 11-9 in SAA play. They battled the Stormy Petrels in both the series and their season finale at 1 PM tomorrow. It will be Senior Day for the Lynx, so get out to the ballpark early as Rhodes will honor 10 senior baseball players.
