DANVILLE, Ky. - The Rhodes baseball team finished with 22 runs on 22 hits as they broke open an 8-8 game to finish off a SAA series sweep of Centre, 22-12 (7), on Sunday afternoon.
The Lynx jumped all over the Colonels, taking an 8-0 lead through three innings. Junior
Bill Munson drove in three runs in two at bats while freshman
Will Hunt blasted a two-run homer. Junior
Bennett Notestine, sophomore
Levi Greenberg, and freshman
Ben Siegel all added RBI hits.
Centre responded with eight runs in the bottom of the third, thanks in part to a grand slam, to even the game. The Lynx wasted no time gaining the lead back in the fourth as Siegel drove in two on a two RBI double while junior
Ryan Olive cleared the bases with a three RBI triple to make it a 13-8 game.
The Colonels got one back in the bottom half of the fourth, but freshman
Jacob Telli did his own clearing of the bases, knocking a three RBI double to make it a 16-9 game in the fifth. Munson, senior
Marcus Moreland, and senior
Jonathan Coleman all added RBI hits to make it 20-9.
Munson made it a five RBI day in the sixth with his second double of the day as Rhodes finally finished the game off in the seventh to complete the sweep with their highest run total of the season.
Munson finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and five RBIs while Notestine and Hunt each had three hits and two RBIs. Telli and Siegel each finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while Telli scored three runs. Moreland went 4-for-6 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Though it was not a prime day for pitching, the Rhodes staff did a nice job managing the Colonels after their huge third inning. Sophomore
Will Vance eventually earned the win, going 2.2 inning and allowing only one run on two hits while striking out four. Freshman
Jake Sossamon got the start while freshmen
Cameron Tinker and
Daniel Kurtzer each saw action in relief.
Rhodes is now 19-17 overall and 9-9 in SAA play. They will take a short break from conference play for a non-conference contest on Tuesday as they welcome in cross-town rival, Christian Brothers, on Tuesday afternoon at 4 PM.
