WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Sophomore
Levi Greenberg hit a walk-off double in the 11th inning as the Rhodes College baseball team scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings, eventually defeating the Pioneers, 9-8 (11).
The Lynx were outhit 14-11, but the Pioneers committed four errors on the day while Rhodes committed three.
Marietta took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Rhodes responded with four runs in the third. Junior
Bill Munson tied the game with a home run, his fourth of the season. After the homer, the Lynx loaded the bases as senior
Marcus Moreland singled home two runs for a 3-1 lead. Freshman
Nick Bosma made it a 4-1 game with a RBI single to complete the big inning.
Greenberg singled home a run in the fourth to put Rhodes in complete control at 5-1. However, Marietta would score runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to surge ahead, 7-5.
Munson would drive home a run on a fielder's choice to make it a one run game in the eighth while Bosma would score on an error by the catcher to tie it at seven.
Marietta got another run in the ninth to go ahead 8-7, but Moreland would put down the bunt in the ninth to tie it and move the game into extra innings.
Freshman
Ben South was great in the extra frames, shutting down the Pioneers, while junior
Ryan Olive led the 11th off with a double. Greenberg stepped to the plate and ended the game with a double of his own for the win.
South earned his first career win, pitching two total innings and allowing no runs on three hits. Senior
Daniel Morris got the start and pitched six total, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out eight. Sophomore
Will Vance had a great appearance in the ninth, allowing no runs and no hits in his outing.
Greenberg finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and two stolen bases while Moreland went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Junior Bennet Notestine finished 3-for-5 while Munson was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Olive had two runs scored while sophomore
Zac Lange, Olive, Greenberg, and Moreland all had doubles.
Rhodes moves to 10-8 overall and will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Thomas More at 2:45 PM in Winter Haven, Fla.
