MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team held off a late rally from the Drew Rangers, forcing a turnover in the final seconds, in a 7-6 win to move to 7-0 on the season on Sunday afternoon at Crain Field.
The two teams were even in shots on the day, both finishing with 26, while also both taking 14 shots on goal. Rhodes forced 19 Ranger turnovers while only giving it away 15 times and were 18-for-21 in clears.
Drew opened the scoring early on, getting a goal two minutes into the match for the 1-0 lead. Freshman
David Perez tied the match at the 6:35 mark with a goal of his own as the teams moved into the second period.
Rhodes took control of the match in the second, first getting a goal from sophomore
Tommy Reingruber to take their first lead of the game. After Drew tied the match at the 5:50 mark, the Lynx scored three goals in the final five minutes.
Freshman
Tyler Milwit struck first at the 4:31 mark, alluding a defender and scoring in midair to move ahead 3-2. Rhodes then proceeded to score two goals in 13 seconds as freshman
John Tooher struck first with 54 seconds remaining on a beautiful pass from sophomore
Justin Powers.
Moments later, Rhodes went on a fastbreak off the faceoff as sophomore
Ryan Fennelly got a beautiful pass from Milwit and finished at the goal with 41 seconds to go to move the Lynx ahead 5-2 going into the break.
Drew would get the lone goal on the third quarter and open the fourth with an early goal to make it a 5-4 game. Rhodes used the next minute and a half to go back up three as sophomore
Steven Yowan and Fennelly each scored a goal.
The Rangers got a quick goal at the 10:48 mark and made it a one goal game at the 3:22 mark. Drew would gain possession with less than 40 seconds to go, but junior
John Wancowicz got a caused turnover with less than five seconds remaining and toss the ball to the other end to run out the clock and give Rhodes the big win.
Fennelly led the way with two goals while Milwit added a goal and an assist. Tooher, Reingruber, Yowan, and Perez each had goals while freshman
Matthew Simon was 4-for-6 in faceoffs.
Defensively, Wancowicz had four caused turnovers and two groundballs while Simon added two caused turnovers and five groundballs. Fennelly finished with three groundballs while Yowan, senior
Tat Whitley, and sophomore
John Snyder all had two groundballs. Freshman
Cameron Link finished with eight saves on the afternoon to earn the win.
The Lynx, whose lacrosse program has only been existence for five years, can match a program high in win totals in a season (8) as they welcome in a tough test to Crain Field in Susquehanna on Wednesday at 3 PM.
