Lynx Baseball Takes Finale Over Sewanee to Complete Weekend Sweep

MEMPHIS - After banging out 22 runs on 27 hits a day ago, the Rhodes College baseball team had to hold off a Sewanee rally, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and defeat the Sewanee Tigers, 6-5, to earn the series sweep over their bitter rivals.

Rhodes moves to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. Rhodes had eight hits on the afternoon while Sewanee had 12. The Lynx also made two errors on the afternoon to Sewanee's one.

Rhodes got on the board early in the first as junior Ryan Olive continued his outstanding weekend with solo shot deep to left field. In the third, junior Bill Munson and Olive each came away with infield singles to drive in a run and move their lead out to 3-0.

Sophomore Jack Mercer earned the start for Rhodes and was great through five innings, shutting the Tigers down and allowing no runs throughout a quick first half of the game.

Sewanee did not go down easily, putting together a four run inning as a mixture of Lynx mistakes and timely hitting from the Tigers pushed them ahead.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Olive led the inning off followed by a RBI triple from sophomore Levi Greenberg to tie the game at four. One batter later, junior Jackson Lourie singled to left to score Greenberg and put Rhodes ahead 5-4.

The Lynx added a key insurance run in the seventh as Munson belted a homer to left center, his third of the season, to put Rhodes ahead 6-4.

Sewanee would get one back in the ninth, getting a solo homerun, but freshman Daniel Kurtzer shut the door on the Tigers to earn his first save of the season and give the Lynx the sweep.

Mercer earned the win, moving to 1-2 overall, as he pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Nick Bosma was excellent in relief, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three hits to go with three strikeouts while Kurtzer got the last out of the game, a strikeout, to earn the save.

Olive led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs including a double and a homerun. Munson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base while Greenberg, Lourie, and junior Bennett Notestine all had a hit each.

Rhodes will be on the road to Winter Haven, Fla. for their Spring Break trip. They will hit the field on Wednesday, March 9th as they take on Marietta at 10:30 AM ET.
