Baseball Wins Conference Series Over Sewanee with Saturday Sweep

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team snapped a three-game skid on Saturday afternoon with 22 total runs and 29 total hits in a pair of Southern Athletic Association wins over Sewanee, 10-0 (8) and 12-4 (7).

In game one, pitching was key as the trio of senior Daniel Morris (3-1), freshman Jake Sossamon, and freshman Daniel Kurtzer combined to hold Sewanee to one hit in the win. Morris went 6.0 innings, allowing the lone hit to go with five strikeouts while both Sossamon and Kurtzer pitched an inning of perfect ball.

The offense came alive beginning in the second inning as freshman Christ Winter singled to left to score one and take the early lead. Rhodes got two more runs in the third as senior Marcus Moreland singled down the left field line to score one while junior Jackson Lourie ground out to score another for the 3-0 lead.

The Lynx exploded for three in the fourth as sophomore Zac Lange singled home one followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from junior Ryan Olive and sophomore Levi Greenberg. Lange would double home a run in the sixth to make it 7-0 followed by a RBI single by freshman Nick Bosma.

Rhodes would clinch the win in the eighth, scoring two runs for elimination as Bosma drove in one on a RBI double followed by the game-ending RBI single from Lourie.

The Lynx hit seven doubles in the first contest as Bosma had a pair of them, finishing 3-for-5 on the afternoon with two RBIs and a run scored. Olive went 2-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored while junior Bill Munson and Lange each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Lange drove in two. Moreland finished 2-for-3 with a double and RBI while Lourie drove in a pair.

In the second game, Rhodes wasted little time to jump on top of Sewanee, scoring four in the first as Olive started the scoring with a two RBI single to left. Following a RBI double by Greenberg to make it 3-0, freshman Will Hunt single to center to score one and increase the lead.

Senior Blake Glauben saw an early exit for precautionary reasons as freshman Cameron Tinker took the mound in the second innning.

Sewanee put one on the board in the second, but Rhodes responded with four more in the second behind a two RBI single from Lourie and a two RBI double from Hunt. Four more runs came across in the third as Munson, Lange, Olive, and Lourie all drove in a run in the inning as Rhodes led 12-1.

The Tigers got a trio of runs in the sixth, but it would not be enough as Rhodes finished Sewanee off for the conference series win, 12-4.

Tinker (1-1) earned the win in relief, going 2.1 innings, allowing on two hits and striking out one. In 1.2 innings pitched, Glauben allowed three hits, but struck out four. Sophomore Trey Mannion pitched 1.2 innings, striking out four, while sophomore Will Vance pitched 1.1 innings with two K's.

Offensively, Olive was terrific, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Lourie added a 2-for-3 day with three RBIs. Greenberg and Munson each went 2-for-3 with a RBI while Munson stole three bases and scored three runs. Rhodes had six doubles in this contest including freshman Brady John going 1-for-1 with one of those doubles. Sophomore Tim Burr added a single off the bench as well.

Rhodes moves to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the SAA. They will look to go for the series sweep over the Tigers tomorrow morning at 11 AM from Stauffer Field.
