MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite three runs scored in the final two innings by the Buccaneers, the Rhodes College baseball team held on for an 8-7 victory over crosstown rival Christian Brothers University.
The Lynx started the game strong with 3 runs in the first inning as junior
Bennett Notestine drove a single down center field pushing Munson back to home plate. Another single down left field by senior
Marcus Moreland sent
Ryan Olive and Notestine home, which gave the Lynx a comfortable 3 run lead.
Rhodes continued their momentum into the second inning, scoring three more runs off a single by Olive, a single by Moreland, as well as an unearned run from Notestine. This put the Lynx up at a dominating 6-0.
The Buccaneers fought hard to stay in the game as they scored 1 run each in the second and third inning as well as 2 runs in the 5
th. The Lynx regained control of the game as Moreland smashed a homerun past center field and Freshmen
Brady John scored on an error which put the Lynx up 8-4.
The Buccaneers rallied in the last two innings, scoring 3 runs, but sophomore
Jack Mercer took care of business as he struck out the last batter and helped the Lynx hold on to an 8-7 win.
Freshmen
John Ganucheau got the start pitching 1 inning, giving up 1 run along with 1 hit to go with 2 strikeouts as well as earning his first career win. Mercer got the save, pitching 1 inning and allowing 1 run on 3 hits along with 1 strikeout. Freshman
Daniel Kurtzer earned the win in relief for the Lynx, pitching two innings of releif ball and allowing no runs on one hit.
Offensively, senior
Marcus Moreland was phenomenal, as he had 3 hits along with 4 RBI's including a solo home run in the top of the 7
th inning. Senior
Bill Munson, Olive and freshmen
Will Hunt each contributed 2 hits along with 1 RBI.
Rhodes climbs to 16-13 on the season and will face the Panthers from Birmingham-Southern in a three game series starting with a doubleheader at 12pm and 3pm on Saturday, April 2
nd, and again at 12 pm on Sunday, April 3
rd.
