Lynx Can't Avoid Sweep as Berry Rallies for Extra Inning Win

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry College scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to erase a three run deficit and scored the game winning run in the 11th as the Rhodes College baseball team could not avoid the sweep in an 8-7 (11) loss.

The Lynx jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as junior Ryan Olive drove in a run by reaching on an error and stole second as sophomore Zac Lange scored from third to take a 2-0 lead. A sac fly from senior Marcus Moreland put the Lynx in control early.

Berry battled back with a run in the first and two more runs in the fourth to tie the game at three. Senior Nathan Foshee put the Lynx back on top as he reached on an error to score a run and make it a 4-3 game, but the Vikings tied it back up in the bottom half of the fifth.

In the eighth, the Lynx appears to have broken it open as Foshee led the inning off with a double followed by a RBI single from junior Bennett Notestine. Lange followed with a RBI single while Olive drove a run in on a sac fly to go ahead 7-4.

However, Berry rallied and tied the game on a solo shot in the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Jack Mercer made an amazing play to get the lead runner at home on a suicide squeeze to eventually send the game into extras.

Neither team go anything in the 10th, but Berry would get the game winning single in the 11th to earn their first sweep over Rhodes.

Senior Adam Putnam got the start, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits to go with three strikeouts. Mercer (2-3) took the loss in relief, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on nine hits to go with two strikeouts.

Offensively, junior Bill Munson was outstanding, going 5-for-6 on the day with a double and two runs scored. He also added two stolen bases on the day. Notestine finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored while Lange was 2-for-5 with a RBI and run scored. Olive drove in two runs while freshman Chris Winter had a double and a run scored.

Rhodes falls to 15-13 on the season and 6-6 in SAA play. They will play the final game of their seven game roadtrip on Tuesday as they head down the road to Christian Brothers for 3 PM matchup with the Bucs.
