MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team scored five goals in the fourth to blow open a 6-5 game and defeat the Hanover Panthers under the lights at Crain Field on Wednesday evening.
The Lynx outshot the Panthers 44-19 and held a 21-15 advantage in shots on goal. Rhodes forced 26 turnovers turnovers on the evening and was a perfect 18-for-18 in clear attempts. The Lynx held Hanover to 9-for-19 in clear attempts.
Hanover scored the first goal of the game one minute into the match, but Rhodes responded two minutes later as senior
Cooper Robinson tied the game at the 11:55 mark. A little more than two minutes later, sophomore
Ryan Fennelly made it a 2-1 game while the Lynx defense stood strong, holding that lead at the end of the quarter.
The Panthers tied the game early in the second quarter, but that set up a string of three straight Lynx goals going into the second half. Freshman
David Perez and sophomore
Justin Powers each scored as Rhodes held a 4-2 lead at the break, while senior
Jason Lee pushed the lead to 5-2 early in the second half.
However, Hanover fought back to tie the match, scoring three straight goals in a span of five minutes. With 30 seconds remaining in the third, Perez scored a key goal to push the Lynx back ahead 6-5 while swinging the momentum back in the favor of Rhodes.
The Lynx would go on to outscore the Panthers 5-1 in the final period. Freshman
Tyler Milwit got the scoring started a little over a minute into to the quarter to push it to 7-5. With 10:45 to go, Rhodes scored three goals in the next three minutes from Fennelly, freshman
John Tooher, and Robinson while Powers added his second with four minutes remaining.
Hanover added a goal with less than three minutes remaining, but Rhodes prevailed 11-6 to continue their best start in school history at 6-0.
Fennelly, Powers, Robinson, and Perez all had two goals a piece while Fennelly and sophomore
Tommy Reingruber each added an assist. Defensively, junior
John Wancowicz continues his outstanding defensive play, forcing two turnovers and picking up three groundballs. Senior
Tat Whitley had three caused turnovers while Tooher and freshman
Austin Le picked up three groundballs. Freshman
Cameron Link was terrific in goal with nine saves.
The Lynx continue their five game home stretch and will also look to continue their hot streak on Sunday as they welcome in Drew to Crain Field at 3 PM.
