JACKSON, Miss. - Senior right handed pitcher
Daniel Morris pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out seven batters to lead the Rhodes College baseball team to a split on Saturday afternoon against Millsaps College.
Morris moved to 4-1 on the season as he faced 31 batters on the day and only had one walk. He finished the game by retiring 12 straight batters to give the Lynx a win in the first game of the three game series.
Rhodes got on the board in the first inning as sophomore
Levi Greenberg reached on an error to score sophomore
Zac Lange for the 1-0 lead. The Lynx were held in check as Greg Matthews of Millsaps pitched a terrific game, going eight complete.
The Lynx got a key insurance run in the eighth inning as freshman
Nick Bosma drove in a run on a groundout with the bases loaded to move the lead to 2-0.
Morris already had enough of a lead as he seemed to get stronger as they game progressed to lead the Lynx to victory. Junior
Ryan Olive and freshman
Chris Winter each went 2-for-4 with Olive finished with a double and a run scored. Lange, senior
Marcus Moreland, and junior
Jackson Lourie each had hits in the contest.
In the second game, Rhodes had difficulty trying to figure out the duo of Daniel Adams and Zack Borne as they fell 4-1 in seven innings. The Majors scored four runs in the first two innings off senior
Adam Putnam.
Putnam (1-3) settled in, going six complete and allowing four runs on six hits to go with four strikeouts.
Rhodes would load the bases with one out in the sixth inning as Winter forced a walk to make it a 4-1 game. However, back-to-back flyouts stranded all three runners to keep the three run deficit in tact.
The Lynx made some noise in the final inning, getitng runners at second and third, but it would not be enough as Millsaps closed the game out to earn the win and force a rubber match tomorrow afternoon.
Greenberg finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Munson was 1-for-4 with a double. Olive went 1-for-3 with a run scored while Winter had the lone RBI.
The Lynx will look to take a key series on the road tomorrow afternoon as they battle the Majors in game three of the series. First pitch is set for 12 PM from Twenty Field.
