MEMPHIS - Freshman
Daniel Kurtzer pitched 6.1 innings to earn his first career win while sophomore
Jack Mercer and senior
Daniel Morris closed the door in relief as the Rhodes College baseball team defeated Illinois Wesleyan, 4-3.
Kurtzer allowed three runs on three hits and struck out three in the outing while Mercer pitched 0.2 innings to get out of the jam. Morris earned his first save of the season, going two total innings and allowing only one hit.
Rhodes took a 1-0 lead after sophomore
Levi Greenberg drove in senior
Bill Munson on a standup double. The Lynx would maintain the one run lead throughout the next four innings as Kurtzer only allowed two hits and retired nine straight batters at one point.
In the fifth inning, Rhodes added three runs in the fifth as freshman
Jordan Baker led the inning off with a single and followed by another single from Munson. Juniors
Bennett Notestine and
Ryan Olive had back-to-back RBI singles to move the score to 3-0. Notestine would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game.
The Titans would get three back in the seventh to chase Kurtzer, but Mercer held strong to preserve the one run lead. Rhodes couldn't get anything else going offensively, but Morris came in strong and finished the game off as the Lynx have now won seven of their last eight games.
Munson finished 3-for-3 on the day with a doubles, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Notestine and Greenberg each added doubles while Notestine and Baker each scored a run.
The Lynx are now 13-6 on the season as they return to Southern Athletic Association play this upcoming weekend. They will travel to Jackson, Miss. for a three game series against Millsaps College. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 PM.
