MEMPHIS - The No. 7/11 Rhodes College baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Maryville College Scots responded with seven runs in the top of the ninth to knock of the Lynx, 13-10, on Sunday afternoon at Stauffer Field.
Rhodes jumped on the Scot early in the first as junior
Ryan Olive scored sophomore
Zac Lange on a sacrifice fly to center for the early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, junior
Bennett Notestine scored on a balk to push the lead to 2-0.
However, Maryville would score a run in the second and third innings to tie the game back up at two. Rhodes would go ahead 4-2 in the bottom half of the third as senior
Nathan Foshee belted a double to left field.
Maryville tacked on another run in the fourth, but a solo shot to left from Olive pushed the Lynx ahead 5-3.
Senior
Adam Putnam struggled in his 2016 debut, going only four innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out three. The Lynx would hand it over to sophomore
Jack Mercer to try and keep Rhodes ahead.
Mercer was solid through three innings of work, but Maryville would scored three runs, all unearned, in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead over Rhodes.
The Lynx were not done yet though, as they rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a go-ahead two RBI single from Notestine as well a two RBI single to right from senior
Matt Schwartz to go ahead 10-6.
It looked like the Lynx were on their way to a opening weekend sweep, but Maryville had other plans as they put up seven runs in the top of the ninth to overtake the lead at 13-10. Rhodes could not answer in the bottom of the ninth as the Scots salvaged a game in Memphis.
Freshman
Chris Winter was the only Lynx with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 on the day while Notestine, Olive, Schwartz, and Foshee all drove in a pair of runs. Lange, Notestine, and Olive all scored a pair of runs as well.
Sophomore
Will Vance ended up taking the loss, as well as a blown save for Rhodes. The Lynx saw six pitchers take the bump on Sunday as they struggled on the day.
Rhodes moves to 2-1 overall and will look to rebound next weekend as they hit the road for Belton, Texas. The Lynx will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor at 11 AM and follow that up with a matchup against Pomona-Pitzer at 2:30 PM in Belton.
