MEMPHIS - Senior
Blake Glauben pitched 7.0 innings and struck out eight to earn a combined shutout while Preseason All-American
Daniel Morris pitched a complete game shutout with four strikeouts as the No. 7/11 Rhodes College baseball team opened the season with a 4-0 and 2-0 (7) win over Maryville College.
Glauben was outstanding, giving up on five hits in his outing and walking two while Morris was a little slow initially, but picked up as the game progressed, allowing five hits and walking three batters. Both earn their first victories of the season.
After a quick 1-2-3 inning from Glauben to start the game, sophomore
Zac Lange singled to left and would move to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Maryville starter Seth Debity. Lange would eventually advance to third on a wild pitch and sophomore
Levi Greenberg would drive in the first run of the season for the early 1-0 lead.
It was all Glauben would need, allowing only one hit in the first four innings as constantly kept the Scots off balance.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lange would reach on a walk and would find himself on third after junior
Bennett Notestine reached on an error giving the Lynx runners on the corner with only one down. After stealing second, junior
Ryan Olive grounded out to short to score one and Greenberg would smash a triple to deep right field to extend the Rhodes lead to 3-0.
As the Lynx continued to cruise on the mound, Rhodes would strike for another run in the seventh as junior
Jackson Lourie singled to centerfield to make it a 4-0 game.
From there, the bullpen took over as sophomores
Jack Mercer and
Will Vance each pitched perfect innings in the eighth and ninth to notch Rhodes' first victory of the 2016 season.
Greenberg finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Lange was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Senior
Marcus Moreland went 1-for-3 with a double while Notestine had the game's only stolen base.
The Lynx turned around quickly for the second half of their double header, only slated for seven innings. Morris, a preseason All-American selection by both D3baseball.com and HERO Sports, took the mound and initially struggled, allowing five base runners and three hits in the first three innings.
However, Morris settled in and proceeded to get out of all three innings unscathed. The Rhodes offense gave Morris a little help in the second as freshman
Nick Bosma ripped a double to center to score Greenberg and give the Lynx a 1-0 lead.
Morris began to take control in the final four innings, keeping the Lynx ahead. After a leadoff double from Greenberg in the sixth, freshman
Chris Winter drove in a pivotal insurance run to extend the lead to 2-0.
From there, Morris closed the game out in the seventh and earned his first victory and complete game shutout of 2016.
Winter finished 2-for-3 with a RBI and Bosma drove in the only other run. Greenberg scored a pair of runs in the second game.
Rhodes is off to a 2-0 start and will look to go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Scots. First pitch is set for 12 PM.
