Eckert's Big Night Not Enough as Petrels Surge Past Lynx in Second Half

ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior Catherine Eckert finished with 22 points including five 3-pointers, but it was not enough as the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels erased a nine-point deficit in the second half to come-from-behind and defeat Rhodes, 63-58.

Rhodes 20-for-63 (31.7%) from the field and 8-for-18 (44.4%) from behind the arch. Oglethorpe shot 19-for-59 (32.2%) from the field and 6-for-14 (42.9%) from deep. Rhodes outrebounded the Petrels, 45-39, but turned the ball over 14 times to Oglethorpe's 10. The Stormy Petrels doubled the Lynx in second chance points, 22-11.

After falling behind 7-3 early in the first, Rhodes finished the quarter on a 14-2 run as the Lynx got two 3-pointers from both Eckert and freshman Sara Giesen to lead 17-9 at the end of the first.

The Lynx continued their hot shooting from deep, getting two more 3's in the second quarter from Eckert as well as a long ball from senior Symone Daniels as Rhodes extended their lead to as much as 12. It looked as though the Lynx were going to go into the break with a double-digit lead, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Bailey Charles made it 36-27 at the break and seemed to jump start the Stormy Petrels.

Oglethorpe seemed to carry all of the momentum into the third quarter where they outscored the Lynx 21-6. Rhodes, who had been shooting so well throughout the first half, could not get anything to fall in the quarter as the Petrels suddenly held a 48-42 lead at the end of three.

At the midway point of the fourth quarter, Eckert hit on a long ball, her fifth of the game, to cut it to a two point game at 52-50. A huge 3-pointer from Emily Buck almost a minute and a half later pushed the lead back to five.

With Rhodes down three with nearly a minute to go and Rhodes does three, junior Blaire Smith came away with a huge steal as sophomore Erin Deery finished the fastbreak to make it a 57-56 game.

After two free throws from the Petrels, Rhodes had a chance to tie, but could not convert. Oglethorpe would ice the game at the charity stripe and earn a huge win over Rhodes.

Eckert added six boards and an assist to her scoring effort while Smith had 10 points and a steal. Daniels finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and a team-leading two steals. Sophomore Erin Deery led all rebounders with nine. Freshman Danielle Summers had four assists off the bench.

For Oglethorpe, Buck led the way with 17 points while Lauren Ransom had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Rhodes moves to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx are back in action on Super Bowl Sunday as they travel to Rome, Ga. for an afternoon battle with Berry. It'll be the second time these two meet in as many weeks as Rhodes defeated Berry on January 24th by the score of 60-41. Tipoff is set for 1 PM.
