ATLANTA, Ga. - Despite an 11 point lead with less than 10 minutes to go, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels were able to come-from-behind and defeat the Rhodes College men's basketball team as the Lynx took a tough road loss on Friday evening.
Rhodes shot 23-for-55 (41.8%) from the field and 5-for-19 (26.3%) from deep, but only scored 19 total points in the second half. The Lynx again struggled from the free throw line, finishing 6-for-13 (46.2%). Oglethorpe shot 23-for-49 (46.9%) and 5-for-18 (27.8%) from deep. The Lynx forced 11 turnovers while only giving it up 10 times and outrebounded the Petrels, 33-27.
After an early 9-7 lead for Rhodes, they found themselves playing from behind as Oglethorpe went on a 10-0 run for a 17-9 lead. The Stormy Petrels would build their lead to 12 at the midway point of the first half, leading 26-14.
From there, Rhodes would go on to outscore the Stormy Petrels 24-6 throughout the rest of the half as they began to heat up from the field. Junior
Brennan Sullivan connected on three 3-pointers during the run while the trio of junior
Daniel Galvin, sophomore
Ian Harrison, and freshman
Daniel Darst went to work in the post to lead the Lynx to a 38-32 lead at the break.
In the second half, Galvin, Harrison, and junior
Tyler Gee continued to give the Lynx great looks inside while Sullivan continued to hit outside shots. Junior
Andrew Lowrie connected on a 3-pointer to give the Lynx a 53-42 lead 9:42 remaining.
From that point in the game, Rhodes only scored on two field goals and only got to the free throw line two times, missing on both attempts. Oglethorpe closed the game on a 20-4 run to pull ahead of the Lynx, taking the lead with 1:10 remaining. Rhodes shot 2-for-11 in the final 10 minutes with four turnovers as the Stormy Petrels came away with the win.
Galvin finished with 18 points to lead the way on 8-for-12 shooting and added nine rebounds a block and a steal. Sullivan added 14 points including four 3-pointers. Gee scored eight points to go with seven boards while Harrison and Darst scored six and five, respectively. Lowrie and junior
JJ Weir each had five assists on the evening while Darst had three steals.
For Oglethorpe, Connor Smith led the way with 16 points in the game.
Rhodes falls to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx will be on the road and will take on Berry College on Sunday at 3 PM ET. The Lynx defeated the Vikings on January 24th, 86-66, in Memphis.
