Errors Prove Costly as Baseball Drops Rubber Match to Hendrix

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team dropped the rubber match to Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon at Stauffer Field as four errors proved to be costly for the Lynx in a 5-3 defeat.

Hendrix jumped on top 1-0 as an error earlier in the end forced home an unearned run. A RBI double from the Warriors in the second inning pushed the lead to 2-0. After allowing five hits in the first three innings, senior Daniel Morris settled down and was able to get through the next two innings allowing only one hit.

On the other side, Rhodes could not figure out Will Nichol, the starting pitcher for the Warriors. Nichol only allowed two hits through six innings and struck out seven batters in the process.

However, still only down 2-0 in the seventh, Rhodes began to make a move, using the long ball to climb back into the game. Sophomore Levi Greenberg stepped into the box and slapped a solo shot over the right center wall to cut the deficit in half. One batter later, senior Marcus Moreland lifted one over the right center wall, another solo shot, to suddenly tie the game at two.

Hendrix used the next two innings to respond as they, again, took advantage of Lynx miscues to go ahead 4-2 in the eighth. Hendrix added one more run in the ninth to hold a 5-2 advantage. Rhodes rallied in the ninth, plating one and threatening on the base paths, but did not have enough, eventually falling 5-3.

Greenberg finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs while Moreland went 2-for-4 with a home run and a RBI. Junior Ryan Olive finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored while sophomore Zac Lange drew a pair of walks.

Morris pitched five total innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out two. Sophomore Jack Mercer (0-2) took the loss, pitching three total innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, and striking out two. Freshman Nick Bosma also got an inning of work in to go with two strikeouts.

Rhodes moves to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the SAA. They will be back on the field on Tuesday as they head to Birmingham, Ala. for a weekday matchup with Piedmont at 1:45 PM.
