Women's Lax Earns Huge Conference Road Victory Over BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore Kendall Cunningham scored five goals while sophomore Maggie Rippeto added four as they Rhodes College women's lacrosse team pulled away from Birmingham-Southern for a 14-11 conference road win on Saturday afternoon.

The Lynx outshot the Panthers 34-18 with 25 of their shots on target to BSC's 15. The Lynx were 15-for-16 in clear opportunities and 13-for-27 in draw controls. Rhodes also forced 15 Birmingham-Southern turnovers on the afternoon.

Throughout the first 15 minutes of the first half, Rhodes built a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from sophomores Olivia Holmes, Maggie Rippeto, and Kendall Cunningham. After a goal from the Panthers to cut the deficit to one, senior Morgan Fuller and sophomore Ashley Doyle pushed the Lynx lead out to 5-2.

The Panthers responded with three goals in a five minutes span to tie the game at five, but Cunningham scored with 2:36 remaining in the half to put Rhodes ahead 6-5 going into the break.

The momentum carried over in the second half as Rippeto scored two goals to start it followed by Cunningham's third goal of the game to go ahead 9-6. Rippeto and Cunningham each added another goal midway through the second, as well as a goal from sophomore Erin Gleeson to go ahead 12-7.

Again BSC made a run, scoring three straight goal to cut it to a 12-10 game; however, goals from Cunningham and freshman Annika Hedlund put the game out of reach and sent the Lynx back to Memphis with a big Southern Athletic Association victory.

Cunnningham and Rippeto each had a caused turnovers while Rippeto picked up three groundballs. Junior Lindsay Gess had two assists while Cunningham, Doyle, Fuller, and Hedlund all added an assist each. Freshman Kaylin Ryan had two caused turnovers while Gess, Fuller, Holmes, sophomore Rachel Windmueller, and sophomore Katherine Tooley all had two groundballs.

For BSC, Alyssa Gentyzel led the way with four goals while Katie Gleeson added three.

Rhodes moves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in SAA play. They are right back on the field tomorrow afternoon at home against Augustana at 11 AM.
