Jason Lee scored the game-winning goal one minute into overtime to lift the Rhodes College men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 overtime win over Huntingdon and continue the best start in school history, moving to 5-0.
The Lynx outshot the Hawks, 35-28, including a 22-15 advantage in shots on goal. The Lynx also forced 23 Huntingdon turnovers while only turning it over 10 times on the other end. Rhodes was 9-for-11 in clears while holding Huntingdon to 9-for-15. The Lynx defense held Huntingdon to 1-for-8 in extra man opportunities.
After going ahead 1-0 in the first minute thanks to a goal from sophomore
Ryan Fennelly, Huntingdon took control of the match and went ahead 6-2 as they scored six of the next seven goals. Thoughout the Hawks run, Rhodes committed six penalities to fall into man down situations.
Before halftime, freshman
David Perez notched a huge goal to make it a 6-3 deficit at the break.
That seemed to spark the Lynx as they scored three goals in the third quarter to even the game up. Sophomore
Justin Powers scored three minutes into the half while freshman
John Tooher answered around the midway point. Fennelly would score his second goal of the game to tie it up as the game moved into the fourth quarter.
Huntingdon would score to make it 7-6 early in the fourth, but Fennelly earned the hat trick at the 5:57 mark to tie things again at seven. From there, no team could find the back of the net as the game moved to overtime.
From there Tooher found Lee who put the game away and sent a great crowd at Crain Field into jubilation as the Lynx opened their home season with a victory.
Fennelly led the way offensively while Tooher had a goal and two assists. Lee finished with a goal and an assist while freshman
Tyler Milwit had an assist on the afternoon. Junior
John Wancowicz had five caused turnovers and added four groundballs while freshman
Henry Hasbrouck added three caused turnovers. Fennelly, Perez, and freshman
Matthew Simon all had two caused turnoves with Simon adding five groundballs. Freshman
Cameron Link had eight saves in the win.
For Huntingdon, Kendrick Ballard and Jakob Works each had two goals on the afternoon to lead the way offensively.
The Lynx are now 5-0 on the season and look to continue their tremendous start into Wednesday's home matchup with Hanover. Faceoff is set for 6:00 PM at Crain Field.
