MEMPHIS - Senior lefty
Blake Glauben pitched a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead the Rhodes College baseball team to a 4-0 win over Hendrix College in the Southern Athletic Association opener on Saturday afternoon.
Glauben pitched all nine innings, only allowed five hits and only one walk. His 11 strikeouts is a career high. Glauben's first 16 pitches of the game were strikes.
The Lynx got on the board in the second inning with a two out rally. After junior
Jackson Lourie earned a walk, senior Mitch Moreland stepped to a plate and laced a double into left center for the early 1-0 lead. Senior
Nathan Foshee followed that up with a single to left to score Moreland and put Rhodes ahead, 2-0.
Glauben did not face any real threat throughout the afternoon, consistenly mowing down the Warrior hitters to keep a zero on the board.
Sophomore
Levi Greenberg stole second and forced a bad throw in the process as it brought home junior
Ryan Olive in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. Rhodes pushed it to 4-0 after junior
Bill Munson flied out to right for a sac fly.
Olive was the only one with two hits in the first game, going 2-for-3 on the day witha r un scored while five other Lynx had a hit on the afternoon.
Game two would be a different story as Hendrix scored three in the first and six in the third, thanks to four Lynx errors in the inning, to fall behind 9-2. Rhodes put two on the board in the first thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles from freshmen
Nick Bosma and
Jacob Telli.
Down 9-3, Rhodes scored four runs in the fifth as Bosma belted a homerun to left and sophomore
Zac Lange had a RBI single to left to cut it to 9-7. However, Hendrix scored three runs in the sixth to make it a 12-7 game. Munson added a solo shot in the sixth, but it was not enough as Rhodes fell, 12-8.
Bosma had a big day, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, homerun, and four RBIs while Munson was 2-for-4 with a solo shot and two runs scored. Lange added a two hit day including a RBI. Rhodes had six doubles in the loss.
The Lynx go to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in SAA play. The rubber series between the Lynx and Warriors is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM as Rhodes looks to clinch their first conference series of the year.
