JACKSON, Miss. - The Rhodes College women's basketball team 26.6% from the field on Sunday afternoon as they could not solve the Millsaps College defense, dropping their regular season finale, 52-42.
The Lynx went 17-for-64 from the field and 4-for-22 (18.2%) from downtown. Meanwhile, Millsaps shot 17-for-53 (32.1%) from the field and 6-for-23 (26.1%) from deep. Rhodes was able to force 20 turnovers and only turned it over 12 times on their end. However, the Lynx were outrebounded 49-38 and just could not get anything to fall on the offensive end.
It was an extremely ugly first quarter for both sides as neither teams could find an answer on the offensive end. Senior
Symone Daniels, freshman
Allie Young, and sophomore
Jessie Ustick were the only ones to get on the board as Rhodes trailed 9-6 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, both teams began to find their footing offensively. Rhodes made it a 14-12 game after a 3-pointer from junior
Blaire Smith. However, the Majors answered with a 13-3 run to go up by 12 with under two minutes remaining in the half.
Rhodes ended the half with a much needed 5-0 run thanks to a layup from Young and a 3-pointer from senior
Catherine Eckert to cut the deficit to 27-20 at the break.
Millsaps took control of the third quarter, going ahead by as much as 16, but the Lynx closed the quarter strong behind Daniels and Smith to close the gap to 10 going into the final period.
A pair of layups from Smith and Eckert to start the quarter moved the Lynx inside six points. Millsaps moved it back to nine, but a 3-pointer from senior
Hannah Orth followed by a jumper from Ustick made it a four point game with five remaining.
However, it would not be enough as Rhodes could only muster four points the rest of the way while the Majors hit shots to pull away and defeat the Lynx, 52-42.
Daniels and Ustick led the Lynx scorers with eight points each while Smith added seven points and seven assists. Eckert and Orth each scored six while Eckert pulled down eight boards. Junior
Bailey Kramer had three steals while Smith, Eckert, sophomore
Erin Deery, and freshman
Danielle Summers all had two steals.
Kala Jewel-Freeman led the Majors with 11 points off the bench while Braxton Thomas and Katie Connor each had 10 points.
Rhodes ends the regular season at 13-12, but will get ready for tournament play, something the Lynx have been strong in the last three seasons. They go to the Southern Athletic Association Basketball Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 5 seed Oglethorpe in Birmingham, Ala. at Bill Battle Coliseum. Tipoff is TBA at this time.
