GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Rhodes College men's lacrosse team ran their record to 4-0 on Saturday afternoon as they scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter to come-from-behind and defeated Carthage, 10-8.
The Red Men outshot the Lynx, 31-25, and held a 19-15 advantage in shots on goal. Rhodes forced 17 turnovers despite turning it over 20 times themselves, and finished with 25 ground balls on the afternoon.
Freshman
David Perez put Rhodes on top 1-0 three minutes into the first half. Carthage would answer late in the quarter to tie it up, but Rhodes would get a pair of goals from freshman
John Tooher in the second half to move ahead 3-1. The Red Men added a goal with under a minute to go to make it a 3-2 game at the break.
Carthage carried that momentum into the second half as they scored three goals in the first two minutes to gain a 5-3 lead. Almost three minutes later, sophomore
Ryan Fennelly made it a one goal game.
The Lynx then scored two goals in a span of 14 seconds as senior
Jason Lee tied the game, despite being a man down, and junior
John Wancowicz scored a goal of his own to put Rhodes up 6-5.
Rhodes wasn't done there, sophomore
Justin Powers and Fennelly each had a goal before the quarter ended to give the Lynx their largest lead of the day at 8-5.
Carthage cut it to a two goal deficit twice, but it Tooher and Powers kept the Lynx ahead with goals in the fourth quarter. The Red Men cut it two with about a minute to go, but it would not be enough as Rhodes continues its best start in school history.
Tooher led the way with three goals while Fennelly added two goals, two caused turnovers, and an assist. Powers also had two goals on the afternoon. Freshman
Matthew Simon added two caused turnovers on the afternoon to go with an assist. Wancowicz led the way with five ground balls while Simon added four.
The Lynx sit at 4-0 with all their wins coming on the road. The Lynx finally come home to Crain Field and will open up their home season on Saturday with Huntingdon College. Faceoff is set for 12 PM.
