GREENCASTLE, Ind. - For the first time in school history, the Rhodes College men's lacrosse team moved to 3-0 on the new season as they went on the road and dismantled DePauw University, 10-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Lynx outshot the Tigers, 52-33, including a 26-18 advantage in shots on goal. Rhodes also forced 25 turnovers while only giving it away 20 times. Rhodes picked up 30 ground balls on the afternoon and was 22-for-25 in clears. The Lynx took advantage of extra man opportunities, going 3-for-7 on the day while hold DePauw to 1-for-3.
Rhodes used their top-ranked defense to stifle the Tigers early on and scored the game's first three goals in the first quarter. Freshman
John Tooher took advantage of an extra man opportunity to put the Lynx up 1-0 followed by goals from sophomore
Ryan Fennelly and Tooher.
The Tigers got a goal early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to two, but the defense continued to harass the DePauw attack. Fennelly would score with less than five minutes remaining in the quarter to put Rhodes ahead 4-1 at the break.
The third quarter is where the Lynx would strike as Rhodes scored three goals in a span of 1:04 to go ahead 7-1 in the blink of an eye. Sophomore
Austin Bridgforth got the scoring started followed by goals from senior
Jason Lee and Fennelly. Fennelly added another goal later in the quarter to give Rhodes a commanding 8-1 lead.
Lee would score a pair of goals in the fourth quarter while DePauw got a few late goals to close the gap, but Rhodes prevailed for, not only their best start in school history, but their third road win of the season.
Fennelly paced the Lynx offensively with four goals followed by Lee with three, Tooher with two, and Bridgforth with his lone goal. Fennelly had a pair of assist while freshman
Tyler Milwit, junior
Mike Knudsen, and sophomore
Justin Powers all had one assist each.
Senior
Tat Whitley and freshman
Henry Hasbrouck each forced two turnovers each while Knudsen finished with four ground balls. Hasbrouck and freshman
Cameron Link each had three ground balls as well. Link would earn the win in goal, finishing with 14 saves on the afternoon.
The Lynx will be back in action again tomorrow, remaining on the campus of DePauw for a neutral site matchup with Carthage. First faceoff is set for a 12 PM ET start.
