MEMPHIS - The No. 7/11 Rhodes College baseball team got eight strong innings of pitching from senior
Daniel Morris and a pair of 3-hit games from juniors
Ryan Olive and
Bill Munson as a pair of 3-run innings lifted the Lynx to 7-3 win over the Covenant College Scots.
A scoreless game carried over to the bottom of the third where sophomore
Levi Greenberg led the inning off with a single, advancing to second on a bad throw by the Scots second baseman. Munson would follow with a single through the left side to put runners on first and third with nobody out.
After Munson swiped second, a wild pitch on a strikeout put junior
Bennett Notestine on first and scored the first run of the game. Olive followed that up with a RBI single up the middle, but another run would come home as the ball scooted by the Covenant center fielder to extend the lead to 3-0.
A solo shot from the Scots made it a 3-1 game in the top of the fourth, but Rhodes responded in the bottom half of the inning as Greenberg drove in sophomore
Zac Lange to increase the lead to 4-1.
Covenant would take advantage of Rhodes errors in the fifth and sixth innings, scratching an unearned run across in each inning to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Morris would lock in and keep the Scots from tying or taking the lead at any point.
In the bottom of the seventh, Munson led the inning off with a single and stole second to get into scoring position. After Notestine reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt, Olive drove in his second run of the day with a single to right. Freshman
Chris Winter and junior
Jackson Lourie each followed with RBIs in the inning to make it a 7-3 game.
Morris would ride the momentum through eight innings while freshman
Nick Bosma closed the door in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning to snap the Lynx three game losing streak.
Morris improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing seven hits and only one earned run, striking out three and walking two in his outing. He was impressive as he pitched against a strong win blowing out to left center all afternoon.
Olive finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored while Munson added a 3-for-5 day with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Lange finished 2-for-3 and had two stolen bases as well while Notestine scored a pair of runs. The Lynx stole seven bases on the day
Garrett Kriston took the loss for Covenant while Forrest Hunter led the way offensively going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Perry Rigby added a 1-for-4 day with a solo shot and two runs scored.
The Lynx are back at it tomorrow afternoon with a tough matchup against Huntingdon College. The Hawks played earlier in the day at Stauffer Field, defeating the Scots, 12-6. First pitch is set for 1:30 PM.
