Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lynx Can't Overcome Sewanee's Hot Second Half Shooting in Loss

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College men's basketball team could not slow down Sewanee in the second half as the Tigers shot 12-for-18 and 16-for-21 from the free throw line. The Lynx would eventually fall, 65-53.

Rhodes shot 19-for-46 (41.3%) from the field and 5-for-23 (21.7%) from downtown while Sewanee finished 18-for-40 (45.0%) from the field and 3-for-12 (25.0%) from the field. The Tigers were able to get to the line 32 times while Rhodes only managed to get to the line 16 times. The Lynx also finished with 18 turnovers while only forcing 12 Sewanee turnovers.

It was a sloppy first half for both teams, but Rhodes jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first seven minutes thanks to five points from junior Daniel Galvin. Sewanee did not get on the board until the 12:58 mark, but proceeded to go on a 9-2 run to tie the game. Rhodes immediately went back up by five thanks to back-to-back buckets, including a three, from sophomore Price Dalton.

However, Sewanee went on a 12-4 run to move ahead 21-18. The two teams limped into the break, but Rhodes got a last second jumper from junior Brennan Sullivan to cut their deficit to 22-21 at the break.

But the Tigers, who only shot 27% from the field in the first half, began to find their touch, as they opened the second half 13-3 run to take a 35-24 lead in the blink of an eye.

The Lynx began to chip away, using Galvin and junior Tyler Gee in the paint to move within two at the midway point of the second half. However, the Tigers immediately pushed it back out to six.

Everytime Rhodes would get withing a possession, Sewanee would have an answer on the other end. The dagger came with just under two minutes remaining as Jacob McCullough drained a three with the shot clock expiring to give the Tigers a 57-48 lead.

Rhodes got it within four late, but could not complete the comeback as Sewanee iced the game at the free throw line for a 65-53 win.

Galvin led the way offensively with 18 points while Gee added 11 points, eight boards, and a steal. Junior Andrew Lowrie had 10 points and three assists in the contest while junior JJ Weir added five assists off the bench. Dalton finished with five points off the bench.

For Sewanee, Keshonn Carter led the Tiger output with 20 points and two steals.

Rhodes moves to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the SAA. They will move into their final weekend of play before the SAA Tournament, traveling to Birmingham-Southern, who just clinched the regular season title this afternoon. Tipoff is set for Friday at 8 PM.
