ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Rhodes College men's basketball team fell just short to UC-Santa Cruz, 111-109 in overtime, on Saturday evening in the Consolation Game of the Lopata Classic at Washington University.
The Lynx shot 37 of 80 in the game (46%) including 11 of 36 from the 3-point line (31%) while the Banana Slugs were 54% from the field and 27% from deep. After a rough half shooting the ball, the Lynx shot 60% in the second half to get back into the game and give themselves a shot going into overtime.
Rhodes trailed by as many as nine in the first half, but was able to erase the deficit and close the gap down to three behind eight points from senior
J.J. Weir and seven points from junior
Ian Harrison.
In the second half, the Lynx came roaring back, taking the lead 58-57 with 16:21 to play in the second half. The two teams exchanged the lead throughout the half, but following a Rhodes 3 from freshman
Owen Galvin, the Lynx pushed its lead out to 10 at 94-84 with 5:19 to play.
However, an 11-0 run by the Slugs throughout the next three minutes pushed them back ahead, 95-94. A 3-pointer from freshman
Kendrick Ashby gave Rhodes a two point lead, but UC-Santa Cruz answered with a layup to tie it at 97.
The Slug would move ahead 102-99, but back-to-back jumpers from senior
Brennan Sullivan pushed Rhodes ahead 103-102. The Slugs drew a late foul with 25 seconds to play and went 1 of 2 from the line while neither team could score in the final second to force OT.
UC-Santa Cruz took the first lead and each team exchanged two points baskets or two free throws throughout the whole overtime. With three seconds to play, Kyle Creighton got a mid-range jumper to fall while Sullivan's 3-pointer was just short on the other end, giving the Slugs the win.
Sullivan led the way with 13 points and two steals while Harrison added 11 points, three steals, and four blocks. Sophomore
Daniel Darst scored 11 while senior
J.J. Weir and junior
Anesu Nyawata each had 10. Weir and Darst each had three assists while senior
