ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Rhodes College men's basketball team fell behind 14-0 to start the game and could never quite catch up as they would fall to nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the Lopata Classic by the score of 120-94.
Rhodes finished 34 of 86 from the field (40%), but struggled from deep, which had been their strong suit so far this season, going 12 of 41 (29%) on the night. On the other end, the 21st-ranked Bluegolds shot a red hot 73% from the field including a blistering 77% in the first half.
The Lynx, playing their first road game of the season, found themselves down 14-0 in the first 4:30 of the game. Rhodes would use the final 15 minutes of the half to try and cut into the deficit.
Rhodes was able to do just that, getting 3-pointers from freshman
Jake Nestlehutt, freshman
Bryce Berry, and junior
Anesu Nyawata as well as layups from senior
J.J. Weir, sophomore
Daniel Darst, and freshman
Owen Galvin. Galvin's 3-point play made it a seven point game with 4:20 to play in the half.
However, a 14-3 run sparked the Bluegolds ending the half on a 24-10 run to take a 63-42 lead at the half.
Rhodes could never gain traction in the second half to make a run at the large deficit as Wisconsin-Eau Claire closed out the game with the win, 120-94. The Bluegolds will take on the winner of No. 9 Washington University and UC-Santa Cruz tomorrow night at 8 PM in the Championship Game.
Senior
Brennan Sullivan led the Lynx with 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting including five 3-pointers. He would score 14 of his 17 points in the second half. Darst added 14 points, seven boards, and five assists while Berry had 14 points and three steals. Galvin and Nestlehutt each had eight while senior
Tyler Gee pulled down seven boards.
For the Bluegolds, Josh Weix scored 24 points off the bench while Chris Duff and Jared Schneidermann each had 17 points. Jack Martinek added 16 and George Diekelman had 15.
The Lynx will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they will take on the loser of the Bears and Banana Slugs in the Consolation Game at 6 PM. Â
