Hot Shooting Chicago Too Much for Lynx Men in Home Loss

MEMPHIS - Despite forcing 24 turnovers, the Rhodes College men's basketball team could not contain a hot shooting Chicago team, who shot 64% from the field, as they defeat the Lynx at home 121-101 on Sunday afternoon at Mallory Gym.

Rhodes struggled on the offensive end throughout the afternoon, shooting only 40%, but did connect on 17 3-pointers. A glaring stat on the afternoon was the Maroons out rebounding the Lynx 58-34.

Through the first five minutes, Chicago maintained a 12-11 lead as Rhodes as five different Lynx got in the scoring column, but the Maroons proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to take a 23-13 advantage.

Rhodes pushed it down to six behind a layup junior Anesu Nyawata and a 3-pointer from senior J.J. Weir, but Chicago was red hot from the field and moved it back to 32-22 at the midway point of the half.

Chicago, shooting 74% from the field in the first half, was able to push their lead to as many as 17 with 5:51 to play in the half and move it up to 20 with two minutes to play in the first.

A flurry of 3-pointers to close the half from freshman Nick de Feria, senior Brennan Sullivan, and freshman Mitch Weatherford closed the gap to 62-49 at the end of the first 20 minutes.

Despite shooting better in the second half, Rhodes could never quite make a run to get back into the game. Chicago continued shooting the ball well and pushed their lead out to 104-76 with 8:15 to play.

The Maroons finally cooled off in the final eight minutes as Rhodes began to find its footing, but it was not enough as the Lynx fell shot to go to 4-5 on the season.

Nyawata led the group with 15 points while Sullivan added 13. De Feria poured in 12 and a team leading four assists while freshman Bryce Berry had 11. Weir, Weatherford, freshman Kendrick Ashby, and senior Tyler Gee all had two steals while Ashby led the way with six rebounds. Junior Ian Harrison finished with three blocks on the day.

Chicago was led by Blaine Crawford with 26 points and nine rebounds while Waller Perez and Ryan Jacobsen each added 25 as the Maroons finished with 78 points in the paint.

Rhodes will break for the holiday season, but is back in action on December 31st as they take on Texas-Dallas in Richardson at 4 PM.
