MEMPHIS - On a day where the Rhodes College football team honored 22 seniors, the Lynx struggled to contain an impressive Centre College offense as they would fall on Senior Day by the score of 66-28.
Rhodes falls to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Athletic Association with one final game to play.
Centre racked up 703 yards of total offensive including 527 yards through the air while the Rhodes offense struggled on Saturday, only finishing with 323 yards of total offense. The Lynx did do a good job of taking care of the ball, finishing with no turnovers, but struggled to get much going throughout the day.
The Lynx started with the ball to open the game and were forced to punt; however, a huge hit from sophomore
Taylor Waddilove forced a fumble and gave Rhodes the ball at the Centre 20 yard line.Â
Rhodes was able to move it inside the 10 on a pass completion from sophomore
P.J. Settles to senior
Alex Richards, but the Lynx could not get points on the board as a missed 27 yard field goal kept the game scoreless.
Both teams traded possessions, but a short punt from Rhodes gave the Colonels great possession. Centre took advantage with a 10 play, 51 yard drive ending in a 13 yard touchdown pass from Devin Hayes to Colin Burnam.
Rhodes went three and out and Centre answered in three plays as they capped the drive with a Hayes pass to Noah Dziedzic for a 49 yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
The Lynx put together a drive going in the second quarter as a 29 yard run by freshman
Monroe McKay set Rhodes up with good field position inside the Centre 20. Settles would hit sophomore
Josh Lucas for a 19 yard score to cut the deficit in half.
However, back-to-back touchdown passes by Hayes pushed the Centre lead to 28-7. An 11 play Rhodes drive, with another healthy dose of McKay as well as a fourth down conversion move the Lynx deep into Centre territory. Settles rushed it in from a yard out to deficit to 28-14.
Centre would score 10 more points before the half to take a commanding 38-14 lead at the break and cap a 24 points second quarter. The Colonels extended that lead to 45-14 as Hayes threw his sixth touchdown pass.
Rhodes would answer with a nine yard touchdown run by Settles, but another touchdown pass from Hayes made it 52-14. Hayes would ultimately finish with eight total touchdowns on the day.
The Lynx got one final score early in the fourth quarter as Settles connected with Richards, who made an unbelievable catch for 6. On this day though, the Centre offense could not be contained in the 66-28 win.
McKay paced the offense with 13 carries for 111 yards while senior
Roc Sherrell added seven carried for 46 yards. Settles had 34 yards rushing with two scores to go with 125 yards passing and two touchdown passes. Richards led all receivers with three catches for 32 yards.
Defensively, senior
Jack Ingalls led the way with 15 tackles and a tackle for loss while senior
John Dodd added 11 tackles. Junior
Elliott Tostrud had nine tackles while freshman
D'On Coofer picked up eight tackles and a sack.
Rhodes will wrap up its 2016 campaign next Saturday in Jackson, Miss. as they prepare for a matchup against the Millsaps College Majors. Kickoff is set for 1 PM from Harper Davis Field.
