JACKSON, Miss. - The Rhodes College football team defeated the Millsaps Majors in the season finale on the road, thanks in part to four sacks and four turnovers by the Lynx defense in a 37-31 double overtime win.
The Lynx conclude their season at 6-4 under first year head coach
Jim Ryan. For Ryan, it is the best start for a first year since the pre-CACÂ days in 1962. His Lynx also finished 4-4 in conference play, finishing tied for fifth in the final conference standings.
The Rhodes offense finished with 347 yards including 260 through the air. However, the story was the Lynx defense, who has had its struggled this season, but finished strong, holding the Majors to 298 yards of total offense, turning them over four times and finishing with four sacks.
Neither team could get much going as a Majors field goal early in the first quarter gave them a 3-0 lead. The Millsaps defense really clamped down on Rhodes, especially the running game, as the Lynx could not get anything going.Â
With 4:20 remaining before halftime, the Lynx finally got something going in the passing game. After back-to-back 10+ yard completions by sophomore
P.J. Settles to
Josh Loud and
Austin Henyon, Settles connected with Loud for a 34 yard gain deep into Majors territory. The drive would eventually stall, but junior
Kyle Edmiston came out and hit a 28 yard field goal to even the game at three.
Sophomore
Eric Monroe intercepted a pass before the half, giving Rhodes a chance to score before the break; however, Rhodes could not take advantage of the turnover and the game was tied at three at the break.
Rhodes started the second half with a bang, as freshman
D'On Coofer came away with a huge sack and forced the ball lose. Junior
Elliott Tostrud would recover the forced fumble, giving Rhodes 1st and 10 from the Millsaps 17. One play later, Settles connected with freshman
Carter King on a beautiful strike to move Rhodes ahead 10-3.
On the very next drive, Proctor's pass was intercepted by Tostrud who returned it to the Millsaps 21. After a penalty, Rhodes had it 1st and 10 from the Millsaps 21. Senior
Roc Sherrell carried five times for 35 yards as he plowed into the endzone from two yards out to give Rhodes a 17-3 lead.
The two teams exchanged possession before the Majors made a quarterback chance to Chance Clowers. Clowers drove the Majors down the field in five plays, covering 50 yards as Clowers took it himself from one yard out to cut the deficit to a one touchdown game.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Majors put together another drive, covering 68 yards in nine plays as Clowers connected Beau Wells for a six yard score to even the game at 17.
Rhodes answered with a 10 play, 73 yard drive which included a 45 yard pass completion from Settles to King. Settles would score from three yards out to put Rhodes back in front 24-17.
Both teams exchanged possessions as Millsaps took over with 6:08 to go. The Majors put together a 15 play, 62 yard drive eating up 5:15 of clock. The Majors converted two fourth downs, including fourth and goal on the three as Clowers found Wells to tie the game at 24 and force overtime.
In the first overtime, the Majors struck first on a one yard plunge from Taz Watson, but Rhodes responded with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Settles to senior
Xavier May.
In the second overtime, after a couple of gains from freshman
Monroe McKay on the ground, Settles connected with May again, who made an outstanding one handed catch in the endzone. The Lynx looked to make it a 7 point lead, but a bad snap went over the head of the holder and kept the game at 37-31.
Two straight incompletions and a false start penalty made it 3rd and 15 for the Majors. Clowers dropped back on third down and senior
Henry Weinreich picked up a huge sack to force 4th and 31. With Millsaps having to go for it, Coofer put the game away and he picked up his second sack of the game to give Rhodes the road win.
Settles finished 18-for-42 with 260 passing yards and three scores while adding 27 rushing yards and a score. McKay had 15 carries for 44 yards while Sherrell had 10 carries for 37 yards and a score.
King finished with five catches for 99 yards and a score while Loud hauled in three catches for 53 yards. Senior
Alex Richards had two catches for 43 yards while May had three catches for 36 yards and two big overtime scores.
Defensively, Coofer had one of the best games of his young career, finishing with 10 tackles to go with 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble. Tostrud added nine tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an interception while senior
Jack Ingalls had nine tackles and a tackle for loss.
Sophomores
Duke Sherrell and
Charlie Hughes each had eight tackles with Sherrell adding 2.5 tackles for loss. Weinreich and senior
Pete Showalter each had sacks while Monroe and senior
John Dodd also had interceptions.Â
The Lynx finish 4-1 on the road this season and will now prepare to move into the offseason as they will look to make a splash in 2017.
