MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College field hockey team earned a spot in the SAA Championship Game for the fifth straight season as they defeated the Sewanee Tigers, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mason Field.
For Rhodes, it is their 10th straight appearance in a conference championship game. They will prepare to take on Centre for the fifth time in the SAA title game with Rhodes holding a 3-1 record against the Colonels.
The Lynx took it to their rivals thanks in part to five second half goals. They out shot the Tigers, 13-2, including a 10-2 lead in shots on goal. Rhodes also had an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Despite six penalty corners and four shots, it was even through 25 minutes as neither team could find the back of the net. Rhodes finally broke through with less than 10 minutes remaining as freshman
Hailey Mules struck to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Rhodes took a relatively close contest and turned it into a blowout in the blink of an eye as they scored four goals in 10 minutes. Sophomore
Jillian Christensen got the scoring started with a goal in the first two minutes followed by junior
Maddie Smith two minutes later.
Senior
Christina DiFelice would score seven minutes into half followed by Mules second goal of the game as Rhodes suddenly took control of the SAA semifinal matchup with a commanding 5-0 lead. Mules would make it a hat trick with under 10 to play to ice the game and send the Lynx to Championship Sunday.
Mules also added an assist to her huge day Christensen and seniors
Mackenzie Busby and
Julia Schiciano each had an assist. It was another terrific day defensively as sophomore
Abby Rockefeller, freshman
Daryl Perry, and senior
Kennedy Brislin led the defensive effort. Junior
Laura Eckelkamp earned two saves in goal and the win.
Rhodes will battle Centre tomorrow at 11 AM for the SAA Championship. Though there is not automatic bid for winning the conference tournament title, a win by either team should be enough to vault them into the NCAA Championship.
