DANVILLE, Ky. - The No. 2 seeded Rhodes College women's soccer game turned a game that was scoreless at half to a blowout after scoring three goals in the second half to knock off No. 3 Sewanee 3-0 on Friday evening at the Centre Soccer Field.
Rhodes will play in its fourth SAA Championship Game in the last five seasons as well as its third consecutive. They will meet the No. 1 Centre Colonels, the team they have met the previous three times, as they look to capture a title that has eluded them the last few seasons.
The Tigers actually out shot the Lynx 8-7, but Rhodes was on target on the day with five shots on goal to Sewanee's one. The Tigers did hold a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, but Rhodes was excellent in their defense all evening.
It was a relatively quiet first half on Friday as Sewanee held a slight 3-2 advantage in shot. The defenses stood tall in the first 45 minutes as senior
Kelsey Sweeney and junior
Ellie Valega controlled the back line and kept Sewanee off the scoreboard.
Sewanee was the aggressor early on the second half as they got a corner kick and two shots off as they looked to find a goal and play back. However, Rhodes finally had a breakthrough in the 63rd minute as senior
Elise Grisoni played a beautiful pass to sophomore
Sydnie Schindler who finished for her team leading 12th goal of the year for a 1-0 lead.
And then the floodgates opened.
Three minutes later, Grisoni made it a two goal lead off rebound. With Rhodes in control on both the scoreboard as well as defensively, the Lynx tacked on one more goal in the 87th minute as sophomore
Aly Hoyt notched a goal.
And it what seemed like a blink of an eye, a close scoreless game became a 3-0 blowout, and Rhodes found themselves playing for a championship.
This season, the Lynx have outscored their rivals 7-0 with six of their goals coming in the second half alone.
Rhodes got a balanced effort offensively as Grisoni and Schindler spearheaded the Lynx offense. Junior
Emma Selner, sophomore
Rachel Giampapa, and senior
Nicolette Glidden also helped to get the offense moving on Friday.
The defense was nearly flawless again as Sweeney and Valega, along with senior
Sarah Wachter and freshman
Carly Cone put together another tremendous contest. Junior
Anna Maldonado earned the win in goal and her 10th shutout of the year.
The Lynx and Colonels will square off at 1 PM ET on Sunday for the SAA crown and an automatic birth into the NCAA Tournament.
