Early Goal Sinks Lynx as They Fall to Centre in SAA Championship Game

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Rhodes College women's soccer team put up another great performance in the SAA Championship Game, but fell just short on Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Centre College Colonels 1-0 thanks in part to an early goal.

Centre out shot the Lynx 11-6 including a 6-3 advantage in shots on target. Rhodes led the game in corner kicks at 11-6. Centre held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first, but it was even in the second half at four a piece.

The only goal of the game came in the sixth minute as Hannah Sirkin made it a 1-0 game on an assist from Shannon Murray. Centre tried to put the Lynx away early, getting six shots off in the first 15 minutes, but despite the early goal, Rhodes settled in and began to play their game the remaining 75 minutes.

The Lynx began to get the ball into Centre territory, earning corner opportunities, but were unable to find an equalizer throughout the first half it remained a one goal game at the break.

In the second half, Rhodes earned eight corner kicks and continued to pressure the Colonel defense. However, Centre stood strong despite an onslaught attack by the Lynx.

Rhodes had four corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, but could not covert as Centre came away with their fifth straight Southern Athletic Association Championship as the Lynx again came oh so close.

Seniors Nicolette Glidden and Elise Grisoni led the attack with two shots a piece and did a terrific job in keeping in keeping possession in Centre territory, especially in the second half. The Rhodes defense was solid as well led by senior Kelsey Sweeney, junior Ellie Valega, senior Sarah Wachter, and freshman Carly Cone. Junior Anna Maldonado was outstanding in goal with five saves on the afternoon.

Rhodes concludes their season at 11-4-1 and will depart five seniors, Grisoni, Sweeney, Glidden, Wachter, and Angie Hurlow. Rhodes thanks their seniors for their contributions to the women's soccer program and will look to the offseason as they prepare for 2017.
