Lynx Women Drop Double OT Heartbreaker to Hendrix in Conference Opener

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team was outscored 28-20 in the second half and could only muster up eight points in two overtimes as they dropped a heartbreak to Hendrix in double overtime on Wednesday evening at Mallory Gymnasium.

For the Lynx and Warriors, it was their conference opener as Rhodes fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the SAA. Hendrix goes to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in SAA play.

It was a struggled for both teams offensively as Rhodes finished 22 of 67 from the field (33%) and only 2 of 7 from deep (29%). The Lynx was terrific all night, forcing 16 turnover and holding Hendrix to 26% shooting including 17% from behind the arch.

The first half was dominated by junior Jessie Ustick, who shot of 7 of 10 in the half for 14 points to takes an eight point lead at the break. Ustick on three consecutive possessions in the first quarter to jump Rhodes out to an early 8-3 lead. Hendrix would close the gap to one at 12-11, but Ustick hit a jumper with 18 seconds remaining to give Rhodes a 14-11 lead after one.

In the second quarter, which has been a tough one for the Lynx so far this season, Ustick scored back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to 18-11. Hendrix closed the gap to 20-17, but Rhodes closed the half with five straight points to take a 25-17 lead at the break.

The lead moved out to 11 at the start of the second half as senior drained a 3-pointer. As Hendrix tried to respond, senior Bailey Kramer got a pair of bucket to maintain the 11 point lead midway through the third quarter.

However, Hendrix finished the half strong and cut the deficit all the way down to three at the end of three quarters as Rhodes only held a 34-31 lead after a 10-2 run to close the quarter.

In the fourth, Rhodes continued to maintain the lead, holding at four points periodically throughout the quarter, but Hendrix tied the game at 43 with 2:19 to go and took the lead with 1:49 remaining. Freshman LaKyia Parker answered on the other end to tie it back at 45.

From there, neither team could score in the final 1:38 and the game moved to overtime.

After a free throw from the Warriors in OT, a 3-pointer from Smith followed by a layup from Ustick gave Rhodes a 50-46 lead. However, Hendrix scored four points in the final 1:21 to move into double overtime tied at 50.

In the second overtime, with Hendrix leading 53-51, Amber Turner delivered a dagger 3-pointer with 2:20 remaining to put Hendrix up by five and eventually put away the Lynx 56-53.

Ustick led the way with 16 points and 10 boards while Parkers had 10 points. Kramer led the team with 11 rebounds to go with six points while sophomore Allie Young pitched in nine points, three blocks, and two steals. Smith added six points and six assists while freshman Anna Muller had five rebounds and four blocks in only 10 minutes played.

Hendrix was led by reigning SAA Player of the Year Sara Dyslin with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Heather Prowse and Turner each had 10 points.

Rhodes will head to Conway this weekend for a pair of games at a neutral site as they battle the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM.
