MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College women's basketball team had three Lynx in double figures and used a 20-8 third quarter to defeat the Rust College Bearcats, 57-48, and earn their first win of the season on Sunday evening at Mallory Gymnasium.
The Lynx shot 21 of 60 from the field (35%) and 4 of 16 (25%) from deep while going 11 of 17 (65%) from the charity stripe. They held their opposition to 30% shooting and 11% from three while out rebounding the Bearcats 48-36.
Rhodes came out hot, jumping out to an 8-0 lead behind a basket from senior
Bailey Kramer, a three from sophomore
Sara Giesen, and three points from sophomore
Allie Young. Rust got it down to 9-6 before a bucket from Kramer and a three from freshman
Kaelee Overfield made it a 14-6 game.
Junior
Jessie Ustick added a jumper as the Lynx took a 16-11 lead after one. Five points to start the second quarter from Giesen made it a 10 point lead for Rhodes and put the Lynx in control.
Young went to work with four of the next six points to push the lead to 13, but Rust would not go away quietly, cutting the deficit down to seven points as Rhodes took a 31-24 lead at the break.
Rhodes took complete control of the game as they dominated the third quarter. Young and Kramer would each score six points in the quarter. The Lynx held the Bearcats to only one field goal in the quarter and took a commanding 19 point lead going into the fourth quarter.
A poor fourth quarter opened the door for Rust as they outscored the Lynx 16-6, but the Rhodes defense came up big when it mattered as they held strong for the nine point win.
Young was terrific on Sunday, going 7 of 12 from the field and pulling down seven rebounds while Giesen scored 15 on three 3's. Kramer had 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and a block while Ustick had six points and 10 boards. Senior
Blaire Smith had seven assists and three steals on the night.
Jasmine Golden led the Bearcats with 21 points while Demetrius Bradshaw had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Rhodes moves to 1-2 on the season and preapre for their Southern Athletic Association opener on Wednesday evening as they welcome in the Hendrix College Warriors for a 6 PM tip off.
